Possibly, but I tend to think that only happened on reddit due to corporate influence and trying to use that as a way to take a stand against a corporation. I think the same is unlikely to happen on smaller sites, more likely the whole site could be gone. Anyway, counterpoint is MetaFilter, which has been around since 1999 and you can find comments from waaaaaaaaaaay back very easily, it’s all indexed for searching quite well.

Oh, for sure, I agree, I have been interested in similar ideas, but these ideas held by the tech elite are some kind of weird insanity of thinking they will have a hand in shaping the future and not that the future is something that is emergent, not controlled.

The main thing I remember about Tim Cook was him making me realize how wealthy white cisgender gay men were hardly different from wealthy white cisgender straight men.

I wasn’t sure if the Nerd Reich was going to be telling me stuff I already knew. I kind of felt like Timnit Gebru called this all when she got shitcanned from Google… because they couldn’t have her talking so openly about what their plans clearly are and were. To the people in charge at Google, it was a feature, not a bug, and they didn’t need this woman (a brown African woman no less, the horror!) telling the world exactly what they were planning and asking them to change it.

I may be more interested if it goes pretty deep into the history of how these people came to be who they are, and what sources influenced their thinking in this perverse “its only utopia if we build it, and if you dont think its utopia you are wrong” attitude they all seem to have.

It’s so interesting to me that they simultaneously think that they can privatize everything and that there will always be people there to care for them somehow. One of the real issues with privatization is the problem of businesses not wanting to train the next generation of workers, they want workers coming in already knowing the ropes, they don’t want to spend money on training them.

So what happens after all the avenues of becoming a doctor shut down, and their private doc retires, and they struggle to replace them because now there are no new doctors? It just doesn’t make a lick of sense, honestly, because shutting down these places will result in people in the medical field having to find other jobs (and they no longer exist in their field once its all shut down) and those skills will end up fading as they move to other fields and the number of people in the medical field able to support ANYONE including the billionaire class continues to shrink.

Everything about what they do is so completely short sighted.

In the early 2000s I worked in the news and used to see her on CNBC. For how intelligent and top of things she seemed at the time, it always was a bit surprising to me that she turned to FOX and then Trump. Makes me a bit sad for her to have chosen such a path, so much potential wasted.

It’s just a bit silly considering how these companies have been leveraging publicly available information and how automated most of their systems actually are. It’s part of why customer service at many of them (not Apple so much I guess) is absolutely abysmal and they basically do their best to try to avoid to having a human being in the customer service loop at all. Automating almost all software and removing the human element has literally been the name of the game for 20 years at least.

I mean the original Google ranking algorithm itself was partially made by checking the publicly available information (via web scraping) of how many times a site had been linked to from other sites. And to keep it accurate, they had to keep scraping constantly to keep updating the publicly available data for their own purposes. All of which was automated as well, by the way.

I wish this was talked about more. So much hay being made about this on the assumption that Google maintains their own database of locations instead of pulling from sources like GNIS like they actually do.

Fuck Google, but we don’t need to make shit up to hate them. In fact, making shit up makes us seem crazy and hurts our position. These companies do enough real evil shit, we don’t need to piss our time away on this non-issue.

Where’s this fucking energy for Google removing sideloading from Android, for example. I’ve seen way more mainstream news about this one item on a fucking map than I have about the loss of sideloading and the loss of actual ownership of the devices we purchase.
