I’m a genX dude, living in a genZ world. I love everyone. Be gay, be trans, be whatever. I love everyone until an individual proves they don’t deserve it. I don’t hate anyone based on groups, I hate people who are assholes.

  • I’ve come up with a few, but I’ll just talk about my favorite race in my world.

There is a small continent (Tah) located in the tropical/subtropical zone of my planet where the only humanoids are a turtle-based race known as the Tahween. They are known for their slow movements, long lifespan (average life expectancy is 340 Sun Cycles, which are roughly equivalent to years, but consist of ten 44-day “months”), and wisdom. They are extremely hostile to outsiders, and very few of them ever leave their home continent. Those who do choose to leave are forbidden from returning. While they are not very good at physical combat, their wisdom allows them to harness powerful water magic and earth magic to defend their homeland. Luckily, they do not use this magic for wars of aggression, since they are isolationist and do not wish to expand their territory/sphere of influence.

Their government is entirely based on who is the strongest wizard. If you want to be the Lord Wizard, you must defeat the current one to get the throne. If the Lord Wizard dies of natural causes/accident without being defeated, a tournament is held to determine who gets the throne. Their economy is basically what we would call perfect communism on Earth. Everyone contributes what they can, and everyone receives what they need. Their diet mostly consists of leaves and fruits, they will occasionally eat a small animal if the opportunity presents itself, but they don’t actively seek out meat. The concept of marriage is entirely foreign to them, they do not form romantic bonds. During their mating season, it’s basically a free for all. They are known to mate with multiple partners during each Vibrancy (their equivalent of our “Spring”), and they often choose an entirely different set of mating partners every Sun Cycle.

As far as religion/mythos, they believe that Tah Ara (similar to Gaia, the spirit of the planet) created them from water, leaves, soil, and a bit of magic. They abhor physical violence, as they feel it is disrespectful to Tah Ara’s creation. As far as the afterlife, that’s not something they buy into. They believe that the materials/energy that make up an individual are not inherently theirs, and are recycled to create new life. They have no concept of a soul, a Heaven, or a Hell.

Their staunch isolationism is a result of an attempted invasion by the Thaug (a humanoid, Rhinoceros-based race, think Rocksteady from TMNT) that took place 2408 Sun Cycles ago. The Thaug are an aggressive Imperialist race, who seek to control as much territory as possible, and only respect power. That invasion/war led to a third of all Tahween being killed or captured, but in the end, they were able to repel the invading force. As a result, the Tahween take a similar stance as the Sentinelese do on Earth, "stay the heck away from us or we will kill you before you can manage to say “hello”.

  • It’s a server I created for my Guild Wars 2 guild. Most of us have been playing the game for 10+ years, so when I started the server, we already had a small pool of members built in. My guild grew to the point that we needed to make a second guild, since we hit the player limit ingame. Then we needed to make another guild for the same reason, and so on. I currently control 8 guilds ingame, between my two main accounts (each account can be in a total of 6 guilds, so I have to switch to my alt account to run the other two guilds).

We are mainly focused on training new players on how to succeed in Raid encouters, Dungeons, and other PVE content. So we get a lot of new people joining the guild/server to learn. We don’t require people to join our guild to play with us or join our discord server, sometimes we run with PUGs (MMORPG speak for strangers) in our Raid party, and when we do we send them the link to join our server, since voice chat makes it easier to communicate quickly. Once they’re a member of the server, they usually stay, though some leave the server once we are done with the Raid.

I also get approached by new-ish players ingame, because they see the guild tag above my head and know our reputation for helping newbies. So I invite them to the server/guild if they want some guidance.

We started out with 34 people, and as of last night, we have 616 members. We’ve had a few people leave, and I’ve had to ban a few people for behavioral issues (we do not tolerate any -ism or -phobia in our space). But we’ve grown a lot, and built a positive and supportive community along the way. We’ve even had a few IRL meetups for folks who are able to attend. The last one was in Vegas, and 41 people showed up. We had a blast.

  • The vast majority of my internet use is on my desktop PC. I don’t use many “apps”, I use websites. Sure, I use Lyft when I want to go somewhere but I’m too drunk to drive. I use Grubhub when I’m hungry and lazy. I use the alarm app when I need to. I use an app to check on the progress of my Sous vide machine.

But as far as general browsing, why would I use a tiny little phone screen when I can use my PC, with a 65" monitor? Watching YouTube on my phone sucks, and makes my neck hurt. Scrolling through content aggregators (like reddit, or my preferred platform PieFed) is much more pleasant on my PC. It’s easier to type, I get to use a mouse, and I can actually see what I’m looking at instead of straining my eyes to look at a tiny phone.

I’m already done with reddit, and I’m glad I am, since they seem to be intent on killing it. RIP to my old friend. We had a good 19 years. But I’ve moved on now.

  • We haven’t had deaths on the scale of WWI or the Spanish Flu since those events.

WWII had 3-5 times the number of deaths (depending on whose numbers you trust) as WWI though? Like, it’s not even close. Even using the highest estimate for WWI (22 million) and the lowest estimate for WWII (70 million) WWII was more than triple the deaths.

The global population at the time of WWI was ~1.8 billion, and at the time of WWII is was 2.3 billion.

So in terms of of percent of the world population, WWI loses.

I will concede that the Spanish flu was a lot worse than COVID.

  • Wasn’t that literally the purpose of grog? A mixture of beer and water used on ships to kill harmful bacteria that would grow in the ships’ water stores over a long voyage?

    1. Grog was a mixture of rum, water, and lime juice. Beer does not have enough of an alcohol content to have any antibacterial impact. Your basic premise is flawed.

    2. The main reasons grog was invented were twofold, first and foremost, it diluted the alcohol to manage the sailors’ intoxication levels (much like drinking a rum and Coke does today). Secondly, the addition of lime juice helped fight off scurvy (leading to British sailors being called “limeys”).

    3. While it did improve the flavor of stale water, the disinfecting properties have been greatly exaggerated over time.
