You can only boot from the C Drive these days because a modern BIOS AI has such a small model it can only read at a first grade level. The first commands it understands are C Drive “the discovery command”, C Drive Run “initial boot”, Run Drive Run “OS handover”.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Things you feel Star Trek handle poorly? (In general, political, technical, etc, share your opinion)English
1·2 days agoFair but depressing take. I’d say one of the critical parts of diversity in Star Trek is showing how different personalities and backgrounds working together can accomplish more. I just wish it sometimes worked against the Federation as well.

15·3 days agoThe lack of racial diversity for the empires outside of the Federation makes it feel like somehow only the Federation ever figured out how to work with others. Even problematic caste style situations do not come up enough, let alone just simple variations of races.
The most “diverse” other empire is somehow the Dominion. We know the other empires have other races in them as well. It’s such a Federation centric view of the universe and I feel that it reinforced my America centric mindset because the parallels seem so direct to me. We are diverse, everyone else is easily groupable into divided others. Only we are Free. Only we are willing to work together.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Can anyone overthrow Steam on PC? "As long as Valve is independent and not a publicly traded company," analyst says it looks impossibleEnglish
2·7 days agoThe fact that they have made terrible business choices doesn’t mean it is impossible to make good one.
The subscription model is not for driving positive revenue it is to smooth out investor concerns. You have steady revenue streams to reassure that your market is stable so you don’t suffer as hard when you drop a Redfall.
The big issue is massive failure of handling day 1 releases. They made it TOO good of a deal. It probably is a corporate structure issue where the division owning game pass was able to sacrifice a neighboring divisions revenue so they could get good metrics.

181·7 days agoMicrosoft GamePass was serious competition and they ruined it, for now. They had managed to build a system where there was no reason for folks not to buy in, people got nearly unlimited games and then often paid for DLC and cash shop items for games they didn’t even own. It was converting the average gaming market to an a la cart style cash shop which as much as 2010 me would consider this offensive, today it is often better for gamers without money.
The only other thing that would seriously compete with Steam would be a marketplace that had tradeable games but I think the game makers don’t want this so no developer would sign up for it.
Itch.io exists and it does a fantastic niche gaming distribution job so I don’t see how a new competitor can do better than what is already out there.
I don’t feel like we make it better by also trying to fear women. I also don’t want to make it so folks are just giving up on vigilance because everyone is bad.
Some people have a very good sense of when people or situations are dangerous and other folks do not have that. I think what I’d ideally want is to help figure out how to identify that and maybe even improve it for folks in safe and healthy ways?
Stuff like this disappointing. It is frustrating to feel that how I was born makes me something to be feared.
Are we better to live in a society where women fear all men? Is it even possible to change society in a way where even some men are considered “safe”?
There was a law a few years back that prevented giving water to people standing in line to vote. Lines in places where your vote matters can take hours. You also do not get time off work so you have to use a personal day or just get paid less that week.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•Make Congress Earn Average American Wage.
12·29 days agoIn theory if we tied the salary of congress to the minimum wage the minimum wage would go up.
In practice the income of a congressperson is tied to their morality. Not their salary.
Not everyone has good role models. Would you rather people get advice from Andrew Tates or Grok? Because you might want it to be someone other than those options but right now that is what a lot of people are picking between and we have no way of reaching and stopping them from picking poorly. As awful as Grok is, it manages to be somehow better than the other options.

49·1 month agoThe bar is not that AI needs to be right. It just needs to be more right than the employee willing to do the job for the price it costs.
People have been bad at their jobs for years. Now computers can be to.

Technology@lemmy.world•EV Charging Doesn't Need to Be as Fast as Gas, Ionna CEO SaysEnglish
2·1 month agoThe point is that when every place you travel has a charging station you no longer need to ever stop for gas or to charge. Every stop just includes the charge. We can never do that with gasoline.

Technology@lemmy.world•EV Charging Doesn't Need to Be as Fast as Gas, Ionna CEO SaysEnglish
18·1 month agoMy biggest problem with my EV is that I was stupid to get the service pack as it never has any service needs. Breaks last twice as long. No oil changes. No critical fluids other than wiper fluid. The easiest to fail part is the 12v battery which is standard for any car. If something hard to replace fails it is going to be a sensor and I’ve had that happen on a gas car before and no one had it in stock because no one stocks random sensors.
The people who reference Dunning-Kruger often vastly overestimate how competent they are at statistics.

Technology@lemmy.world•Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Peter Thiel All Fled California’s Billionaire Tax. Nvidia’s CEO Isn’t Going Anywhere. Even With an $8 Billion Bill Coming His WayEnglish
101·1 month agoThe average tax income from billionaires in california looks to be around 10million a year. So combined the about 200 billionaires in california are paying 2 billion a year. Rough numbers would be that is 150 of them left then the one time tax would start being a negative income in 10 years. That assumes money stays flat.
Honestly there is no way that this ends up being a serious net negative and these folks are still operating in California enough that they may fail to avoid residency review.

4·3 months agoThis is a tale older than AI. Most of the AI productivity pushes I struggle to get adopted fail not because of AI bad or its too hard to do. They fail because of a broken CI/CD pipeline. They fail because some team thinks their process is sacred and unique.

If centrism and bipartisanship were what voters wanted then the Dems would have won the Flordia governorship. That race exemplifies exactly the strategy that got us to where we are today.
