Depends where you are in the country or how wealthy you are, on whether learning a foreign language is a meaningful thing to do. People who live towards the middle and up north can easily go their entire lives without knowing another language. People who live towards the southern border could get a lot out of knowing Spanish. Towards either coast and knowing another language maybe useful. It’s a massive country that primarily speaks English, so it shouldn’t be a shocker to see that many wouldn’t need to learn a second language. I, myself barely know part of another language. And part of that is, it just isn’t really useful to me since almost no one here speaks another language.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Elon Musk’s Colossus 2 data center installed 59 natural gas turbines without permission, report claims — thousands of tons of pollutants reportedly impact black communities in Mississippi already suffEnglish
61·5 days agoThat is where you are, unfortunately, wrong. The generators may be used under the pretext of being incase the power grid fails. However even under circumstances where they shouldn’t need to be operated. And I shall repeat myself here, only seems to be done in black and brown communities to harm the environment in those specific areas. So, no. It is not “supreme neglect”, but done with intent and with prejudice to the minority groups who were already living in the area.
TLDR: No it’s racism, you shill.

39·5 days agoOoo I wrote a paper for a uni project and this issue came up and it is depressing. Data centers near black and brown communities do this exact practice all the time. Even if the electric grid can support the data center without issue, they will still turn on gas generators. With the sole purpose of adding additional pollution to the area, just to harm minorities. Meanwhile they will not do the same to white communities. It’s pure racism, through and through. It’s not just Musk, it’s every billionaire, it’s every data center owner.

51·19 days agoNo let’s not do that. Building these slopstations will only contribute to the build up of space debris. Making it harder for future generations to have access to the stars. Just shoot them into a mountain side, or the ocean floor instead. Far more economical too.
I can wait for new games to go on sale, there’s so plenty of great older games and a consistent flow of good indie games to play. AAA titles can wait till they are cheap enough to be worth the cost. Especially now with AAA being the cost of 4-5 Silksongs but not being 4-5 Silksongs of value.

Games@lemmy.world•GTA 6 Reveals $80 Price Tag And Ultimate Edition BonusesEnglish
5·26 days agoSeveral of those sycophants also had the gaul to tell me that I too would buy a brand new console just to play GTA VI sooner. No buddy, I can stick to my morales and beliefs. I got time to wait for this game to be available where I want it to be, and for it to be a more reasonable price.

Games@lemmy.world•GTA 6 Reveals $80 Price Tag And Ultimate Edition BonusesEnglish
302·26 days agoYeah fuck off with that bullshit, I’ve waited a long time already for this game. I can fucking wait even longer for the pc port and for that to come down to $20 or less. No way in hell is this game worth $80, not unless it is literally flawless. Meaning no bugs, no battlepass, no other macro transactions, no extra paid dlc. It needs to be the greatest game ever made to even come close to justifying that price tag.
Oh and how much I am laughing at all those Rockstar sycophants who said they would buy a brand new console just to play GTA VI on release now. Only for them to buy it again when it comes to pc. Still want to pay $500-900 for a PS5 plus an $80 game? Want to justify to your family that that game will be a nearly $600-1,000 purchase in this economy? Yeah they forcing you to sell the console and game the same day you get it.

Cooking @lemmy.world•Penne alla vodka I made the other dayEnglish
7·2 months agoThis is the recipe I used, copied straight out of my recipe list
Penne ala Vodka 1. Ingredients 1. 16 oz Penne Pasta 2. 2 tablespoons Olive Oil 3. 4 tablespoons Butter 4. 1 Onion 5. 2 Garlic Cloves (2 teaspoons of minced garlic) 6. 1/2 cup Vodka 7. 1/2 cup Tomato Paste 8. 1 1/2 cup Heavy Whipping Cream 9. Salt 10. Pepper 11. Basil (Thinly Sliced) 12. Parmesan 2. Instructions 1. Boil a generously salted pot of water for the penne and cook it al dente according to package directions 2. Meanwhile, add the oil and butter to a skillet over medium heat 3. Sauté the onion for about 5 minutes or until softened (ok if it lightly browns) 4. Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds 5. Add the vodka and let the sauce bubble for 30 seconds or so 6. Stir in the tomato paste until you've got a smooth mixture 7. Stir in the cream, and reduce heat to medium-low 8. Let the sauce warm through 9. I find this sauce thickens up very quickly (within a couple minutes), but feel free to cook it a little longer to thicken it up even more 10. Season with salt & pepper as needed 11. Stir in the fresh basil if using 12. Toss with the drained pasta (if needed, thin the sauce out a bit with a splash of hot pasta water prior to draining it) 13. Serve with freshly grated parmesan cheese

For me it’d be a minimum of a 18 hour drive just to go somewhere where English isn’t always the default. Can be over a day’s journey to the other side of country. It’s just not like Europe where it’s an hour’s of a few hours trip to another country where they speak another language. Instead it’s a several hour trip just to go to the next state over who speaks the same language as me.
There is a lot of fair criticisms to make of our countries, but this isn’t really one of them. Instead you have to look a little deeper to understand the why people here don’t always know a second language.
