2·4 days agoYeah, me too. ;) I think there’s at least something worth learning.
I’ll usually avoid creating a new post with very basic tests such as this one…

… so for my latest tests, I still try to finish something.

Turns out I started these forest tests because I was trying this type of mountain ridge style and I’m trying to find a tree style that goes along nicely.

2·6 days agoCampaign Cartographer 3+ is indeed only available for Windows. Though I must say that I have it working under WINE just fine. YMMV, ofc.
Glad I could help.
One more thing: The official forum is a place full of very nice and helpful people.
I do use it myself for SciFi (mostly for Traveller) and I like it. Of course, the number of available styles is not as overwhelming as the ones available for fantasy, but there are some good options.
One thing worth noting: for Sci-Fi you definitely want the highest tier, which includes Cosmographer and all the annuals.
The page for Cosmographer shows a few styles: https://www.profantasy.com/products/cos3_examples.asp
And here’s a few deckplan exampless on a classic Traveller style: https://www.profantasy.com/products/cos3_deckplans.asp
As for the annuals, there’s this post on the forum with a small screenshot/thumbnail for each issue in most annuals: https://forum.profantasy.com/discussion/10366/cartographers-annual-all-the-issues-linked-in-one-place
Finally, there’s this Youtube Playlist with a few of the mapping sessions that focused on Sci-Fi styles: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrFvDl9qgYgsCVt58a41H3rcDjsAc4P4h
That’s the main way it’s used, but there’s no limitation to use it in another way.
There are some styles suited for modern day maps. Or historical maps, such as the April issue of this annual:
https://www.profantasy.com/annual/2022/2022-cartographers-annual.asp
And with Cosmographer and a few annual issues included, there’s plenty of SciFi styles to choose.
They have a YouTube channel where they stream a mapmaking session, you get to see quite a few styles:
This is an almost-everything bundle. For those unaware, every month they release a style, tool or guide and the 12 months make up each Annual Volume.
This page showcases everything in the latest of the included annuals:
https://www.profantasy.com/annual/2023/2023-cartographers-annual.asp
Feel free to ask if you want the opinion of a happy customer.

3·12 days agoThis release is a work of love by our benevolent overlord @eerongal@ttrpg.network.
For those who missed it, we were provided with a peek some time ago:
Why not both? ;)
LOL… it was supposed to be a statue, but then I drew in a detailed style everything else.
On an unrelated note… I have these blue and red scraps of paper, and I’m not sure what to do with them:

I’m thinking that I could try the blue ones for drawing snowy or icy areas. Not sure how it will go. Guess we’ll find out.
But the red ones, those are more difficult. For starters, it’s a dark-ish red, which makes it more complicated. Perhaps I should use a sharpie (something with a thick tip) instead of a pen? And then there’s the theme… what fits well with red? Yeah, sure Hell is associated with red, for starters, but I don’t know how I would draw hellish landscapes.
Any ideas?
Not sure I made it “swampy” enough…
Nah… real fjords would be narrower and longer, right?
Haven’t tried it myself, but Wylock did a video on the mechanics of his own Neon Skies:

2·2 months agoYeah, I guess I was just completely disconnected on the real hazard of depressurization. It’s not just about holding your breath.
The worst part is that I have read about this stuff in several contexts. Maybe it’s just that it’s not a common part of my life.

4·2 months agoThanks for the link. I’d forgotten about this. Of course, I’ve only read it phrased in the scenarios where scuba divers resurface too fast.
I guess my proposed solution only works within a pressurized environment.

2·2 months agoYou can’t? Huh. I’ve got some reading to do.
Edit: there’s another comment with a relevant link. The problem seems to be the pressure difference, regardless of your previous actions.

Oh. I hadn’t noticed!! 😅
