I don’t disagree that it makes people lose trust, I’m just saying that a practicable straight answer would also make people lose trust

I think he’s right to deflect on Brookfield though. Governance of asset management is very complicated, so it’s very easy to misrepresent an honest answer to an objective question. If the question is not relevant and has high potential of being used for misinformation, I think it’s best to deflect. The only other option is to openly say “I could objectively answer this question with a 2 hour long explanation that you’re probably not educated enough to understand” and that’s not going to fly well either.
Victor Villas@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Conservative MP gives up seat for Pierre Poilievre to run in byelection1·6 days agoIn theory, nothing. In practice, half as much of what’s wrong with conservatism. But I was referring to “enlightened centrism” is more specific: the tendency to position oneself in the middle of two ‘extremes’ because it’s a comfortable position, to play a role of enlightened by always taking a both-sides stance. That’s what I’m referring to as a fantasy, because we know that in practice, for the core issues of politics, almost always there is a wrong side of history stance.

Why even bother creating a steel man for conservatism? Free yourself from this enlightened centrist fantasy.
Victor Villas@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•Conservative MP gives up seat for Pierre Poilievre to run in byelection3·6 days agoAll the people that thought Poilievre would not continue as the opposition leader need a wake up call. You still don’t understand what you’re fighting against. Cult of personality is a major pillar of fascism, and loyalty (to the leader, not to the country) is the most valuable trait. Poilievre had a few humiliating defeats but he’s still gaining grounds for the CPC, and the conservative wave is still on it sway, bolder and with lots of resentments piled up.
Take this seriously. The enemy doesn’t have to be smart or competent, they just need to amass power. https://www.antihate.ca/40ways

Makes accounting a nightmare if it’s not integrated with Point of Sales. But Hong Kong and Brazil and a few other countries already figured out how to use a single system for e-transfers and digital payment method, it can be done if Interac is extended - and better yet, nationalized under the central bank.
Yes, it always has been propaganda. Central and South America has suffered at the hands of American exceptionalism and propaganda for generations. The difference is that now the gaze of imperialism is pointing inwards and to the north as well, which is unusual.
