33·11 hours agoTIL a racial slur with over a hundred years of use to demean and insult billions of people is the same as the word used to describe big titty dragons having penetrative sex with automobiles.
Please post the updated slurs.txt so I can call you them.

Surely they won’t just use $20 glonass or beidou receivers…

Privacy@lemmy.ml•[Discussion] Which privacy apps / services do you think are most likely US government honeypots?
1·2 days agoSo you have two different countries, two different sets of laws, and two different services with wildly different offerings.
You can’t really compare a drilled down percentage of compliance and reach the conclusion that there’s a difference in methodology under those conditions.
Just the much broader spectrum of services that proton offers makes it more likely that they will be in a position where they are required to comply with a larger portion of requests than tuta.
This is not intended to be a defense of proton, just a recognition that metrics are hard to take seriously in a comparison.

3·2 days agoNo company is in a position to resist lawful orders from government (not good orders, lawful).
It’s why every company that sells security makes a big show about planning to leave some western country when they say they’re gonna do mass surveillance. It’s all they can do.
Email is not secure and cannot be made secure.
Do not ever send anything through email that you rely on being private.
The Republican Party was formed in 1854 and Lincoln was elected president running as a republican in 1860.
Replace your thermal paste with ptm or some other ptm like.
The paste becomes crap over time.
It may be worth your time to use a ptm alike and new thermal pads on your 7600 as well, or pay a shop to do that.
Check that air is actually getting to your components. It’s easy for fan screens to get plugged up and for some reason people used to not put enough fans in their cases.
Those msi b450 motherboards have annoying bioses so check if there some ridiculous fan curve mess turned on or misconfigured.
I call else fails, noc-tua, blow on that thing.
You can use smartctl or some gui wrapper for it to do the wd app stuff (warning, this will not work and you will have to learn how your specific drive misreports smart data!).
You’ll figure out how to print and scan in linux eventually if your printer is supported. It’s probably supported.
What do you use the hp printer app for? What do you use the wd drive app for?
All the rest of the shit you asked you’re just gonna have to figure out for yourself. The answers are all yes but you’re gonna have to learn how it’s different.
I am speaking from decades of experience when I say the following:
No one can help you with this particular problem in any serious way if you don’t post your cpu and gpu models.
If you are on a laptop or some brand of desktop you need to post the model for that too.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•TIL that RestlessOS, fork of GrapheneOS, can run GOS on non-pixel phone - GrapheneOS Discussion Forum
2·5 days agoI am basing my statement on leaks from companies that sell phone hacking equipment to law enforcement, military, intelligence and government contractors.
It’s worth looking into those leaks because they give you insight into what can and cannot be trusted without placing the burden of understanding how on your shoulders.
Avoiding the necessity of deep understanding of hardware and software security details is important because the simpler and more straightforward security is, the more likely to achieve consistent process compliance you are.
If you would like to understand, there’s a ton of resources out there. One recommendation to preserve mental health: never go down the arm derivative design process rabbit hole.
I believe that the mit license is trash and only gpl and other viral licenses are worthwhile, but in case of safety or security the type of software or license isn’t the most important thing.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•TIL that RestlessOS, fork of GrapheneOS, can run GOS on non-pixel phone - GrapheneOS Discussion Forum
173·5 days agoThere’s a really good chance that a person running this would incorrectly assume they have some level of security and safety approaching graphene.
It uses vendor kernels and relies on the user to monitor update channels and perform patches.
If you need security and will not buy a pixel, you are most likely best served by switching to ios.
That’s not because I feel that a person who will not buy a pixel is somehow less-than or stupid, but because ios is very secure when hardened and kept up to date.
I saw you asking about backup cameras. The way to go with those is to spend 1-200$ on a dashcam system that has a rear camera and permanently wire it in such that it kicks into “backup camera mode” when you put the car in reverse.
You have a screen, yes, but it’s not tied to anything and it’s not infotainment. All of em do gps tracking and speed monitoring now too so when you get pulled over you have the docs for court.
Permanent installation also lets the dashcam work as an always on anti theft system. This may require some consideration to avoid running down your battery over two months of letting the car set. Most people use a battery tender when they’re not driving a car for a long time though.

Break your boy off a piece of the rapidly inflating contents of that bank account and I’ll fill you in on how to get past that feeling and reach a more whole state of being.
