I know someone who got his dream job in Brazil. His plane landed and he asked his local host where he can get some halal lunch. He was told that there didn’t seem to be any halal food options in the city that’s the host knew of. Guy got on a same day flight and flew back home. This was 20 years ago.

My uni has places selling halal food nearby, but they’re expensive so I just eat vegan.

What city would that be? In São Paulo there’s plenty of halal restaurants, in Rio there’s a couple. In other parts of the country could be more difficult.

If they’re eating halal for reasons they dont seek to change (religious or otherwise) it can be extremely difficult to “cook at home” because you need to secure halal food sources, which if there aren’t even any restaurants with halal food, it may be extremely difficult to secure halal ingredients

Fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, legumes like rice, wheat, beans, and lentils … all default halal, no?

No. Halal is basically Kosher for Muslims. So much so that my Muslim friends are perfectly happy getting lunch at the local kosher deli. The animals must be butchered a very specific way, and overseen by a Jewish or Muslim authority to be kosher or halal respectively.

Yes, plant-based foods can be halal, and in many cases, they are by default. Fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and legumes are all naturally halal as long as they are not processed or prepared with haram substances. […] If these foods are handled, flavoured, or packaged with non-halal ingredients such as alcohol, gelatine, or animal-derived enzymes, they may no longer be considered halal.

I don’t know how reputable Halalification is, but it was high on the list of search results and the entire answer seems well-reasoned.

I think that seafood is basically the same as with Kosher… so you can only eat things from the sea that have both fins and scales. Or is it gills and scales?

I worked with a Muslim in Amsterdam who ordered vegetarian because he was pretty sure it would be Halal. That was 20 years ago, so maybe he’d have an easier time eating non-vegetarian now? I see lots of Halal signs in restaurant windows, but who knows?

I have no idea. Wikipedia says

Made, produced, manufactured, processed, and stored using machinery, equipment, and/or utensils that have been cleaned according to Islamic law (shariah).

i don’t know enough about Islamic law to say whether or not are default halal. They could be. I dunno!

If I got my dream job and it required me to be a pescatarian, vegetarian, or vegan: my diet would change immediately.

I get liking meat but damn.

If your job asked you to eat dog would you do it?

            Because thas what your asking.

Halal isn’t a preference, its a standard for how meat is killed and prepared all the way to your food to your plate.

I think you got the post you’re replying to completely backwards.

They’re saying in that man’s shoes, they’d adopt a diet like pescetarianism or become vegan, which would allow them to practice halal even without needing dedicated halal meat sources.

That’s a very poor strawman analogy.

A better analogy is, if your dream job said you could no longer eat steak or chicken, would you do it? If your dream job required you to eat a vegan or vegetarian diet, would you?

OP wasn’t suggesting that the person eat non-halal meat, they were suggesting they just don’t eat meat.

The privilege of being vegetarian or vegan would probably increase the health of our society quite a bit, as well as our environment if everyone adopted that standard.

Either way: if I’m getting my dream job out of it I’ll go full vegan gluten free hard mode yo.

That’s great, can you awknlowdge there’s a large host of reasons beyond a persons control that makes 100% vegetarian adoption impossible?

Its great that YOU can do that, not everyone can.
