Are you ready for a super unpopular opinion? No holds barred? You asked for it:

Dogs suck. I don’t like them. Glad if you do, please enjoy. But they slobber, shed, smell and are generally mostly a nuisence. They can be fun for brief periods, but they’re way more work and hassle than they’re worth. My brother is thinking of getting a big dog and I hope he doesn’t because it would make me reluctant to spend a weekend at his place. I can’t believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their dogs more than their kids. I can’t believe people consider themselves their pet’s “parent”. I can’t believe how forcefully the online community backlashes to the idea of kids or judgemental of “ill-mannered” and neurodiverse kids, yet will happily say “it is never a dog’s” fault, no matter how “bad” the dog is.

Cats can sometimes be ok, if they’re not noisy and don’t shed too much. But generally having animals in the house isn’t great at all.

Thank you for your attention. Future Lemmings will look back at my comment history from unrelated threads and judge me for this, even though I’ve posted in the context of the current thread.

Lowkey I agree 💀 also like if you can afford a dog, you’re like partway to affording a kid, so just save up for that

I think you pissed off Mr. Scruff lmao. He copied your comment word for word, just replaced dogs with kids.

        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the heads up. How hilariously unoriginal and surprising to get so upset by my comment. I wish him and his dogs a whole load of child-free happiness.

For anyone thinking of using any of my future comments: I am ok with full use and alteration of my comment for free under a Creative Commons licence. I just ask for an @ attribution so I can laugh about it.

I dunno’, I think you’re both right, with the caveat of untrained dogs/kids, IMO. In either case, there is a WORLD of difference between one that listens when told to go play outside and one that will draw on the walls with crayon or piss the moment you look away.

It’s the same kind of people that have terrible dogs and terrible children.

In either case, a well kept/trained dog/child can be pretty solid company. Though usually a little harder to entertain a child without sticking them to a screen.

Way too many people don’t treat their dogs right (or just deliberately get a breed that’s aggressive towards strangers) and end up with the dog equivalent of a drunk hooligan. I’m sort of alright with friendly dogs, but fuck all those people with aggressive ones.

I kind of agree. I like pics and vids of dogs, but actually being around them is kind of gross and scary. Cats are more my speed. They clean themselves. They don’t need to be taken outside just to take a shit. They usually don’t smell. They sleep a lot and generally just act really chill. I haven’t had a cat jump and bark (or whatever the cat equivalent would be) at me in the way that dogs do. I feel like I have an understanding with cats.

All the upvotes to you. I too hate dogs. I mentioned at r/unpopularopinion that I allow my dislike of dogs to carry into my playing of Red Dead Redemption and they all lost their shit.

Want an even less popular opinion? A good portion of the reason people love their dogs so fiercely is because they are such a pain in the ass. It is basic cognitive dissonance: we love what we suffer for, like sororities and fraternities (because of the hazing etc.), military units (because of the misery, starting with boot camp), orthodox/intense religions (because of the constant self-denial and public embarrassment of living the rules), etc. Same with dogs.

I really don’t care for dogs either, we had a choreographer once bring her German shepherd to rehearsal. The dog was decently well behaved and sat in the corner and played with a squeaky toy but sometimes it would fart and it would be awful.

…dogs are fine but high-maintenance by nature; dog people, however, are often egotistical, use their dogs to feed that trait, and i don’t care for their company…
