From Ricky Roman
Beauty is not the point, but when they provide an opportunity to capture it, I do my best to do it justice with my lens.
Well. Ricky did do justice to the moment.
I get the feeling that something died shortly after, too.
An owl isn’t going to pose that well without there being a little something in it for them. 😁
So.
You’re saying if I want Le Troll to pose… I’m gonna have to tie up little rabbits like that goat in Jurassic Park?
I have GHO that loves to hoot his little head off when I’m trying to go to sleep. (I can hear him as I’m tapping this out instead of doomscrolling).
Theyre always gone when I go out to try and get a pic.
I tried to set up a webcam, and he decided to use it as a perch. (Seriously. All I see are too-close talons.)
To date, the only photo I have is this one, of them perched with their mate in a neighbor’s tree.

I’ve seen clearer photos of freaking Sasquatch.

I mean…that would probably work… I hear some of the sketchy owl tour operations basically do this.
The talon picture sounds cool!
The camera I had set up wasn’t able to focus on something that close, so it kinda sort of is just a vague talon-like blur. I’ll see if I still have it on my back up drive, but it wasn’t a very good photo.
He’s got a very nice hooting voice. You’d think with how secretive he is… he’d sound like Deep Throat ratting out Nixon.
It’s still proof it was there! Your house has been blessed with its owlishness.
I’ve been hearing my resident GHOs again. I was worried for a bit, not hearing them for a while.
Owls seem like the no-snitching type of bird. They get their own justice.
BirdNET-PI is a meant to run on a raspberry pi, and records and catalogs every species of bird by their call. (And keeps up with changing calls, actually.)
You might be surprised what you’ve got around you.
Oh yes, @onigiri@sh.itjust.works has one of these, so I’ve checked into it a few times. It’s still on my want-to-do list.
They do return some false positives, but it still looks like a load of fun.
