Who better to urge it than someone who knows exactly what the alternative is?
As someone from a Catholic background, I always thought it was funny that some protestants claimed to be more Christian than the pope. It’s always weird to see angry “Christian” Americans complain and bitch when the pope just reminds them about Christianity.
