I will have to quote my good friend here:

“As an Englishman it pains me to say this. but i hate the “french are cowards” joke because its just not fucking true at all and is all just because france refused to join americans illegal invasion of iraq. (and and being in a country that has a LONG history of fighting wars against the french i aint having our biggest enemy be seen as a coward)”

      To your point

“Historian Niall Ferguson argues that France is the most belligerent military power in history. It participated in 50 of the 125 major European wars fought since 1495; more than any other European state. It is followed by Austria which fought in 47 of them; Spain in 44; and England in 43. Out of the 169 most important world battles fought since 387 BC, France has won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_history_of_France#%3A~%3Atext=Historian+Niall+Ferguson+argues%2C49+and+drawn+10.

I hate how 911made it a meme to link the French military to cowardice and surrender

Basically every country in mainland western europe was either axis aligned or capitulated, nobody hates on Denmark, Finland, or the Netherlands, for example, do they? and the French scuttled their own navy to prevent it from being seized.

Not all of it. The British finished off what they had left believe it or not. The French still haven’t forgiven them.

In Germany there are a lot more Jones about the French army, which probably stem from how fast France was captured in ww2.

Selling a French army rifle. Good condition. Never used, only dropped once.

How many gears does a French tank have? One forward for the parade, 5 backwards for war.

Why does a French tank have rear view mirrors? So the can alsonsee the front.

Whats the first thing a French soldier learns? To capitulate in 10 languages.

How many man do you need to defend Paris? No one knows, no one ever tried.

      And so one.

In a way, this is quite idealistic. I hope one day all flags on earth will too be bleached, and we can all share a planet with neither nations nor borders. One humanity, united.

You mean, most successful military power in history (in terms of win/loss record) France?

IIRC a British engineer secretly etched a Union Jack on the leg of the Apollo 11 lander, so that’s the only flag still on the moon.

Why France? I don’t get it.

OK, reading the comments I get it now. 😐

Welp, at least you made me look up a fun fact:

Of the three experts quoted, this one is actually the most optimistic. All three agree that the flags would be bleached white. Two of them believe that the flags then turned to ash. The meme shows a flag that is bleached white, but otherwise intact; this is almost certainly not the case.

I don’t think OP is making jokes about surrendering, just referring to the period when France actually had a white flag.

However, white gradually became the pre-eminent royal and “French” colour, especially from the Hundred Years’ War onwards. By the later centuries of the monarchy, a plain white flag was widely seen – though never formally declared – as the personal emblem of the king and, by extension, of the French state itself.[1][2]. The tricolour flag, adopted during the Revolution and the Empire, was abandoned under the Restoration and replaced by a white flag, usually bearing the royal arms. It was itself abolished in 1830, and the tricolour was permanently restored.
