What’s good for your aging gut may also be good for your aging brain.
A first-of-its-kind study in twins found that taking daily protein and prebiotic supplements can improve memory test scores in people over age 60.
Published in 2024, the findings are food for thought, especially as the same visual memory and learning test is used to detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
The double-blind trial tested two inexpensive plant-fiber prebiotics that are available over the counter in many countries.
How did the researchers source these supplements?
I’m asking because AFAIK there’s no regulatory framework anywhere on the planet for products like this, which means that the manufacturing process is unregulated and the variation of compounds within each dosage is unknown.
In other words, what did they actually test?
From the article - “inulin, a dietary fiber in the fructan class. The other, fructooligosaccharide (FOS)”
Yes, those are the active ingredients. You cannot buy a box of 100% inulin or FOS.
The brain-gut connection has been known for a long time and is, I suspect, much bigger than we even imagine, so it would make sense that a gut health supplement would also lead to better brain health.
