It’s so resilient, too. Like, I can see not examining things that Zuckerberg says because they don’t sound idiotic on first glance. And the US is very much “more money = better than” so why not give extra weight to anything some rich guy says.

But Musk and Trump say multiple obviously-stupid things every day, are visibly wrong all the time, and still get breathless treatment. “Wow, Elon Musk says he expects oil to go to $69/barrel by the end of the week! Does he know something others don’t??”

It’s almost like all of these CEOs have something to gain by people believing them.

“CEO said a thing!” journalism involves parroting the claims of a business leader or executive with absolutely no context, correction, or challenge whatsoever, no matter how elaborate the delusion.

Telling everyone Elon was a fraud for years was a painful time. Because people would just believe his endless claims that never turned out to be true. I could list a dozen major lies of his and they would just say “Just wait bro! He will save us all!”. Ugh.

Then again it was still not as painful as today. Journalism is largely really really bad and that’s in part to the fact most of it is owned by the obscene rich.
