Not to defend breadtube in general, but Contrapoints is a different level of awful.
They’re basically all Contrapoints
The main figures associated with BreadTube are Natalie Wynn, creator of ContraPoints; Abigail Thorn, creator of Philosophy Tube; Harris Brewis, creator of Hbomberguy; and Lindsay Ellis, creator of a channel named after herself. Originally the label was imposed on these creators, and while they all identify with it to varying degrees, there remains a vibrant debate as to who is part of the movement.
Every single one of these people are Liberal Zionists on the same level as Contrapoints. TheKavernacle made a pretty decent video about it
Even hbomb? I haven’t seen much if any of his stuff recently or on Israel but hes the one person in that group I actually kinda like/respect.
Hbomberguy did nothing but some retweets and sitting on the fence.
Well that’s better than actively being bad at least
For an influencer group supposedly based on being radically left and addressing the important issues it’s basically a death sentence to their persona’s to completely ignore a genocide and be less radical than Miss Rachel.
I guess, but also I’m okay with still consuming content from people not the most radical.
Also, hbomb hasn’t posted in 2 years on his YouTube anyways, and I personally don’t really give a shit about such people’s presence on other platforms. He also doesn’t really do videos on current events that much.
The rest of ‘breadtube’ I really don’t care about at all tbh
Shaun and a few others who are much less “radical” did special videos and streams on Palestine very early on. The genocide was a massive deal in the left and pressure to speak out was huge but many were afraid to use their platform. It was kind of ironic that breadtube was getting outflanked by “normies” who were way less into politics. I don’t watch hbomberguy at all so I can’t speak to how “left” he is. I wouldn’t discard him for entertainment content but any political video he posts from now on will have no credibility left.
I’m always torn on stuff like this. On the one hand, it’s pretty clear that Natalie is against what’s happening and making a bit of gallows humor about the situation.
On the other hand, you obviously shouldn’t make a comment like that to people who are directly experiencing genocide, it’d be insanely insensitive.
It feels very leftist infighty, but I can totally see being upset by a comment like that from a personal standpoint. Does any of this matter? Is this just the friction of existing in such different circumstances and having a global communication network? Or is there actually something to pull from this?
No Contrapoints is a full on Zionist like most of “breadtube” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggztdoPzvew
I’m not quite to the end of the video and I’m actually learning quite a bit I didn’t realize as I go along, but I don’t know that I can quite see the covert malice he’s attributing to her here. It kinda strikes me as though Natalie just doesn’t understand all that much about the situation and is shooting for damage control, both at home and abroad. As he points out, that’s absolutely worth criticism and plays into Israel’s whole strategy, but I don’t know if that’s quite the same thing as what he’s calling her on the surface. Being ignorant and scared to engage with a topic you don’t understand is chicken shit and harmful, but I don’t know if I’d be so black and white about it.
Still, dude makes some pretty good points and I’m glad you linked me to this because I hadn’t really thought about some of the ways he describes the conflict and solutions forward. If anything, I think I’m just realizing how ignorant I am about the entirety of the conflict as well, but especially how things are framed when talking about the conflict (re: his points about how Natalie spoke about the conflict).
What’s important to keep into account is the timeframe. In the moment it’s glaringly obvious when 6 months into a genocide one of the supposed top lefties holds radio silence besides supporting the administration responsible for it. Now that we’re years into it those extra months feel much less of a deal than they really were. Also props for actually engaging with the content.
Geneva Convenience is basically synonymous with constantly attacking anyone even mildly progressive. Essentially they are so far on the other end of the horseshoe they’re doing the same work as the far right.
Imagine unironically invoking horseshoe theory in this day and age
