It’s sad it has to be mentioned but glad the article calls out the purity test mindset and arrogance as two reasons why a ripe youth from 2010-now has gone unfortunately more to the right than it should have. There have been many charlatans gaining followers for no purpose other than their own self-aggrandizement and ego–rather than knitting the fabric of collective needs and power together.
Gatekeepers are the opposite of big tent and historically one of the approaches has worked–and it’s not the one that often arrives with an air of superiority and performative division.
I saw this all a ton after Occupy Wall Street; new, vocal, passionate lefties who made overly-broad claims they were divisive and went unchallenged. Men, particularly were broadly and publicly denounced by such charlatans without qualifiers, criteria, though many were shoulder to shoulder with those looking to change and fix historically inequitable structures and systems. What did this do? Gave a bunch of males–many of them young and impressionable-- the message they had no place on the left since they were not a partner in fixing things but someone to “shut up and dribble” at best and at worst a target or enemy of those you might be trying to support. It’s super important that more female voices are heard, leaders chosen and that opportunity is made more equal–but these charlatans did a decade’s worth of damage before in the early 2020s a few articles finally came out against the approach that perhaps the idea that roundly bashing “men” as a category might not be the path to building a broader movement and coalition. The left went from 99% vs. the super rich oligarchs with middle america totally aligned with the occupy movement to withering away to small factions protecting and advocating for their “own” cause.
The purity test mindset derives from centrists that think they are leftists trying to place themselves as the authority in organizing while pushing away people that know how to organize.
And those purity test are what got us Trump twice. While the democrats are very far from ideal at least you can work with them on some level and they don’t want gut every social program that helps the poor.
I do not think Democrats have shown “you can work with them on some level.”
They have shown with their actions they would rather cede power to fascists than let genuine progressives win and have demonstrated proudly they learned nothing from the experience of doing so.
Establishment Democrats have proved without a doubt they will functionally do nothing to stop Republicans from gutting every social program that helps the poor except make purely performative statements about how against it they are. Same thing with Schumer and Jeffries with respect to “being against” the Iran War, they want this almost as badly as Republican lawmakers do.
The DNC must go.
OK. Whatever you say bub.
Refusing to support a genocide isn’t a purity test. Trying to claim other people are responsible for trump is lazy. That wound is self inflicted
I disagree. We are where we are now with Trump and Israel because of that. We yelled from the rafters telling you that Trump would make it worse and we have been proven right.
We wouldn’t have a problem had Democrats listen to leftists in 2016 that Hillary Clinton could not win, that they were backing the wrong candidate. And if they did select Hillary as their candidate and Trump wins, his second term will be worse than his first. And then they didn’t listen to us again in 2020 when we told you that electing Biden would get Trump reelected in 2024 and the 2024 version is going to be 10 times worse than his first term. Internal DNC polling never showed Biden or Harris beating Trump before the primaries and they still decided to run Biden. Trump is a DNC self-inflicted wound
