Much as I dislike social media, blocking me from installing whatever the hell I want on my device sounds… lame?

Cautiously optimistic about this one. $500 for a niche Linux phone that works as a phone is fair.

And color LED notifications! Why did we ever get rid of those?

I’m happy to see this trend. I’m not trying to wean myself off a smartphone, because I never used my phone that way. I just don’t want to pay for, and be spied on by a bunch of crap I don’t use.

$500 and up with no specs mentioned. Yikes.

Price aside, I absolutely love the idea of this and would compare it to the CAT S22 Flip I’ve been using for almost 2 years. Mine runs a (now) de-Googled Android 11, so it is getting a bit long in the tooth. The screen on this one also seems a bit larger which would be nice for maps and such (the S22 can do Organic Maps just fine, but the screen is tiny).

Commodore’s patent-pending technology blocks social media platforms and internet browsers at the system level.

I don’t like this, though. At least, not the web browser part of it. The nice thing about the S22 is I can do that just fine, albeit annoyingly small and suboptimal, when I need to. Like, if I’m out and about and need to look up a business or phone number or something. The catch is that while I can use the web browser for what I need, it’s too small / clunky to spend time farting around with things that aren’t necessary. Hopefully there’s a setting to allow that because that would be a dealbraker for me as I am on the lookout for a worthy successor to my S22.

Oh, very nice. Must’ve missed that link.

So, specs-wise, it’s not far off from the S22 other than running a cleaner and newer OS and having twice the RAM (4GB vs 2 and quite a bit more onboard storage (64 GB vs 16). Screen is even the same res, so kinda bummed but understandable that 480x640 (portrait VGA) is sufficient for the form factor/use cases.

The camera is a LOT better, though.

      patent-pending technology

What? Simple access control is now patent-pending?

The Android container allows installing Android apps, sp that is simple to circumvent.

Also, no mainline kernel means it is expensive trash within a couple years. I’ll pass on this one, I’ll rather continue porting Linux to phones myself… I don’t want trash.

Would be cool to know what components are user serviceable. I really dig the aesthetics of this phone (except the founders edition, just like the ultimate 64 founders edition, reeks of trump.)

Yes. Visit reddit’s /r/dumbphones for repeated absurd requests on a phone that can support all of the apps necessary, but automagically prevents one from installing social media apps or browsing the web.

So tired of big tech’s UI forcing me to install browsers. My android phone has 18 of them and I’m installing more every day.

yes, as demonstrated by your comment.
