The European Commission will engage with consumers and publishers by the end of 2026 to explore ways to improve industry standards, as a response to the European Citizens\' Initiative (ECI) ‘Stop Destroying Videogames\'.\u202F

However, to address players’ concerns, the Commission has committed to taking several steps.

First, it will initiate an exchange with the video game industry and consumer representatives with the aim to draw up an industry code of conduct on managing video games’ ‘end of life’.

Second, the Commission will work with consumer organisations and authorities to raise awareness about the applicable rights that protect consumers, including on safeguards protecting the economic interests of consumers

    According to EC;

    Existing EU consumer law already provides for important safeguards protecting the economic interests of consumers. Video game providers must inform consumers about the duration and the conditions for terminating the contract before the consumers signs up for the video game. The Directive on digital content and digital services provides consumers with remedies when the content or service provided does not conform with the contract and what consumers could reasonably expect. Consumers may be entitled to proportionate refund of their purchases.

    I like video games just as much as the next person, but we seriously have bigger fish to fry in the EU right now.

    We have a massive war going on on our eastern front, we have megacorporations trying to destroy our way of life while stealing our data, we have lost our biggest ally to a blabbering buffoon and his gang of goons, we have China trying to dump their goods on us to try and price our own products out of the market and on top of that, right wing extremism, racism and fascism are on the rise (again!). Yes we need to keep video game companies in check too, but I don’t really think this is such a big issue. Thank you for reading my hot take.

      They are a big institution with capacity to deal with all those issues at the same time. The solutions are simply too anti-capitalistic for them…

      Your take is also exactly what a politician would say if they’re unsupportive or ignorant of the initiative.

        I’m neither, so please hold the accusations.

        Yes they can do multiple things at once, but they have a finite amount of people and resources. I support the cause but I don’t think it is the biggest deal either. I’d rather we tackle the big issues and that both we and the EU invest our finite time in that.

          But are we seeing great progress on those other issues, which would indicate they are investing lots of time?

          Also, most of the things you count up are events outside the direct control of us here in Europe, so the EU is mostly managing a situation there. As you yourself point out, dealing with out of control capitalism is one of the challenges we are facing. This issue is at it’s core just that… it really makes no sense to me, why you are downplaying it as unimportant.

          I would actually argue the reason for the popularity of rightwing politics is largely an expression of frustration about our institutions staying passive in the face of the upwards concentration of wealth, which is what causes games to be treated as products more than art/entertainment.

          Btw, I was not accusing you of being ignorant, just pointing out that you use the same excuses.

    The EC has been sold out. It always acts against the interests of ordinary people. This is the most pro-corporate Commission ever.
