This is basically a cliche at this point. The number one way to prevent a break in is to make a house look occupied. The number two way is to add or at least make it look like the house has a security system. After that you’re more likely to get hit by a drive-by than a home invasion.
I mean I get you but its not a good argument. The argument is someone has chosen to defend their residence with a gun and its now being made inneffective. Yes there are plenty of ways to prevent a break in but its irrelevant to what he is talking about. The thing is the bill already addresses this:
“We listened about self-defense,” Briggs said, noting that the bill’s definition of “possession” includes having a gun close by, so the owner may readily use it but a child or other unauthorized person may not gain access. “So the person who keeps it next to their bed, that’s reasonable.”
so basically its saying it needs to be locked up if you do not keep it close by.

School shootings aren’t happening because of the firearms, they’re happening because our society is broken. There is a ton of items that can be fixed that will go a lot further in curbing gun and overall violence than more feel good gun laws.

More schools
Ending the war on drugs
Ending for profit prisons
Safety nets for the most vulnerable in our society
Mental healthcare available to those who need it when they need it
That’s just a start. Gun ownership is here to stay and everyday more on the left arm themselves. Gun laws are not as popular as they used to be, because the public is finally waking up to the fact that feel good laws don’t work.

Most mass shootings, school or otherwise, are done with firearms that were legally acquired by the shooter themselves. No amount of secure storage is going prevent the shootings because the shooter presumably has access their own gun safe.
