      Nah, if it’s eels in NZ (the ODT bring a local rag here), they hide in the shadows of riverbanks.

      I do think there’s some bizarrely complex life cycle though, like mating out in the deep ocean and spawning at the top of rivers, so a horrendous commute but I’m beyond sketchy on the details

        fwiw the image seems to be of electric eels, which are not closely related to proper eels, proper eels being the ones with the wackydoodle larva-on-the-other-side-of-the-world lifecycle

        and i’m pretty sure proper eels exist basically everywhere
