If you love DnD I think there’s a very good chance you’ll love this movie, but even if you don’t love DnD, I think it still makes for a very entertaining adventure comedy that even people who have never played DnD will enjoy. Definitely worth a try at least
Hell, if nothing else, the simple fact that Justice Smith made up “somatic components” (gestures, moves, etc.) specifically to see what the CG team’d come up with. 😆
It was great. You should definitely watch it, even if you aren’t a fan of D&D.
My biggest issue is making the main character a bard who doesn’t even get a SINGLE swing in combat, or a single spell to cast. He seems to mostly just exist as a peg to hang the story on.
He clinches all of the hard rolls for the party. Exactly the role for a bard.
Agreed. If you’re running a bard and not acing soft skill rolls for the party, you’re playing another class with more steps. Looking at you, Lore/Sword/etc. Bards, ferreal. Pick a lane.
I mean, there’s a pretty critical casting of minor illusion that he’s responsible for. And, it was pointed out to me, that the various instances of him cajoling the party along, especially when the flashier members are having doubts, is basically Bardic Inspiration. Which I think is a neat way of handling it.
You could argue there were quite a number of subtle casts he got off. A particular instance of suggestion comes to mind.
It’s one of those movies that’s just genuinely fun to watch, without any major problems that take the fun out of it. Really solid watch, I do recommend it.
It felt more like a session of D&D than a movie based on D&D lore. Go in expecting popcorn fantasy adventure and I think you’ll be very pleased

I remember near universal surprise that the movie was actually pretty good. Not world altering, but a fun evening.
Given the history of DnD movies I was hesitantly hopeful for “watchable trash”. To get something genuinely good was indeed a surprise
Solidly in my top 3 movies of 2023 with the other two being Barbenheimer. I’m not even a DnD player, I know a little bit about it because I’m a terminally online nerd who’s been playing vidya games for over 20 years and has occasionally read comics that are inspired by DnD , but never been part of a campaign. Unless you count Baldur’s Gate 3.
It’s just a ton of fun. Chris Pine plays his character so well, I can not imagine him as anything else anymore. Like in Star Trek he’s not Kirk anymore, he’s Edgin. Everyone else also played their roles… Honestly, I’d say flawlessly. I don’t remember a single actor being bad in that movie.
They don’t do a ton of the actual rules and mechanics stuff from DnD (like quite obviously there’s no dice rolls in combat), but the references they do have are quite funny. Any background knowledge you have of DnD or Forgotten Realms will enhance your experience with the movie, but it’s absolutely not necessary to find the whole thing hilarious.
Yes it’s good, but THERE ARE NO OTHER D&D MOVIES (no really, there were four others and they were all awful. The latest one is good though)
IMHO, as an OG Forever DM, the latest iteration is boosted by the astonishingly confident suckage of the previous straight-to-torrent flicks.
Also, re: the latest, the easter eggs are all over, genuine, and cleverly done.

I like playing D&D. My kid loves the old D&D films (I do not). My partner has zero interest in D&D. We all enjoyed it a lot.
At least one of those non-existent D&D movies had a few good one-liners.
I loved it. It is funny and definitely scratches that fantasy itch.
If you like marvel movies
While I can’t entirely say you are completely wrong, I generally do not like marvel movies yet I did enjoy the d&d movie.
They’ll certainly go with a new adventure using the previous characters, but I’d honestly love it if their roles were cameos or background to some new people in different roles and new issues to overcome, in a new setting. The general vehicle of seeing an actual game from within the world worked well, and plenty to use, but I feel we’ve seen these characters’ arcs and it will feel heavy handed to invent more problems to overcome. And I get it, that’s exactly what players will do with their established party, but a lot of the deeper arcs wold be over many adventures and playing sessions, not as a one shot.
But I hope they turn out something decent. I’m all for a lower budget, more character interaction and back and forth.
I remember someone suggesting they get the same cast but have new roles to imply the players have all rolled new PCs.
I’d be good with that. Makes sense, the self image imposed on the characters. Nice challenge for the actors too.

I’d watch the heck outta a d&d2. The first one is one of my most rewatched. It’s just so… nice. Good amount of fun, funny, action, and that fat dragon I love.
I too enjoyed fat dragon. A friend told me it already had lore. I read some lore. I enjoy fat dragon even more now.
