Doctors at Toronto’s SickKids hospital say serious e-scooter injuries involving children are becoming a daily occurrence, with many requiring surgery, intensive care and rehab.

She said stronger public education, clearer regulations, better enforcement and safer infrastructure are all needed to reduce the number of serious injuries.

Beno also said many parents don’t realize that privately owned e-scooters can travel much faster than rental models.

Rutten said SickKids researchers have documented crashes involving speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour.

Where I live they recently implemented a minimum age of 15 years for riding e-scooters that can exceed 15 km/h and I think it’s a very sensible change.

No helmets and standing up on an inherently unstable platform with lots of speed on tap, what could go wrong? I got my first concussion on a kick scooter, they are waaaaay less safe than bikes.
