I hate how accurate this is and the fact that, no matter whose hands we place this power in, we as a working class are fucked.

At a certain point just close the border. It isn’t as if Canadians are going to want to buy any USA products now anyway is it?

Yeah, let’s let the bully get their way, that’ll only work out well for us.

Edit in case someone needs a meme to understand that eye for an eye doesn’t apply to every situation evenly

If you are content to throw around pithy aphorisms in place of rational discussion, consider that an eye for an eye leaves the world blind.

You realize dollar for dollar doesn’t mean retaliation with tariffs directly, right? There are other tools in the toolbox.

You’re a treacherous POS if you think whatever you said isn’t completely stupid

Buddy, you are ALL up in your feels and not in control of yourself. You’re not responding to what I wrote, you’re responding to voices in your head. I was commenting on the quality of your argument, not on the underlying truth of the situation. The point being made is that any position can be justified when you use cliches instead of actual reasoning. For that you have to resort to childish name calling? Clearly you are not being a serious person right now. If you can pull yourself together, you’re welcome to try again, but I have reported your abusive comment.

I’d also like to add that even if I was advocating for Canada to be annexed or some shit like that, your response would still be unacceptable. You don’t get to abuse people because you don’t respect their opinions. That’s fucked up.

The statement about tarrifs hurting american people wasn’t in the statement yesterday, but it has been said before. He doesn’t mean they hurt US people solely, he means they bring no benefit to the american people.

At midnight tonight, the U.S. intends to impose a 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods. Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.

      • US tarrifs make canadian goods more expensive for US consumers. The money collected goes somewhere? Idk.
      • US tariffs hurt canadian businesses because they make it harder to be competitive when selling to the US.
      • Canadian tarrifs make US goods more expensive for canadians. The money collected for these tariffs are used (at least in part) to fund relief programs. There are also some specific exception programs for certain sectors.
      • Canadian tariffs hurt US businesses because they make it harder to be competitive when selling to canada.

In the coming days, the government will introduce additional measures to support Canadian workers and businesses, building on the nearly $25 billion in support provided over the past 18 months.

So while it sucks for everyone, I think the point he’s trying to make is to highlight that the canadian gov is using the retalitory tarrifs to mitigate the damage caused by US tarrifs, not just for punishment or to impose a tax on canadians. Perhaps important to note is that it’s “dollar-for-dollar” not like-for-like, as to reduce impact on sensitive sectors.

Yeah, tariffs also hurt the importer. Hopefully they’re going to target industries that Canadians are less reliant on / can easily substitute with domestic or allied nations’ goods. The restrictions on US alcohol worked well for this.

There may also be some industries where, if you are reliant on America and you believe that’s a problem in the long-term, then cutting that reliance down may justify the harm of the tariff.
