I’m really looking forward to the story. It seems much more mature than GTA 5 and I imagine the romantic layer creates a lot of opportunities for character development and depth. The personal interactions we’ve seen in the showcase were mostly pretty grounded and believable, although there still were one or two of the more GTA-typical eccentric characters, which I’m fine with.

Currently I’m playing GTA 5 for the first time and especially Michael and Trevor are such boring caricatures, as are most side characters. Franklin is by far the most likeable of the three, but as the newcomer he gets almost zero backstory. Really the writing of the whole game is so over the top, it’s hard for me to build any connection to the plot. This might have been popular in 2013 (Rick and Morty started in December of that year) but I don’t think it has held up well.

I remember the story of GTA 4 was a bit more serious, so I might replay that as well for comparison.

Yeah, 5’s story is pretty mid and I agree that franklin is the most likeable, but I find it weird that he’s just a minor catalyst to a story that could otherwise happen without him.

4 has by far the best story of the GTAs and I doubt 6 will beat it, as I assume it is aimed at casual audience.

I don’t really think that 5’s story does happen without Franklin, though, is the thing. He isn’t one of the big movers of the story, but he is the boots on the street that gets things done. Michael likes to think that he’ll go do thug shit when he needs to, but he doesn’t, he’s an organizer more than he is a goon. Trevor just isn’t reliable to get things done when you ask him to, he’s going to do things his own way and that usually involves putting a wrench in your plan. Without Franklin you just have two old men past their primes who might have big dreams but they don’t have the organization and the gumption to pull it off. Franklin is their man on the street, he knows people, he drives, he keeps a cool head and he sticks to the plan. He’s probably the most competent criminal of the trio, in my opinion, if not the most famous or the most successful.

          Okay, I see your point.

Though I do feel like “goon and keeping-grouded-er” isn’t a role that needs to be peeformed by a playable chracter, it could be offloaded to an NPC. Also, he doesn’t know people, that’s why he needs Michael.

I’d be more forgiving if he tried to do his own schemes, but whenever he isn’t Michael’s goon he’s just Lamar’s goon instead. Or Simeon’s, or Devin Weston’s, or Steve Haines’, or JB’s.

The strength of vice city and San Andreas was that despite the wacky shit in the story, the protagonist is pretty normal and relatable, with a clear goal involving getting their own back.

In V they became stereotypes whose basic motivation is frankly greed. The story isn’t that interesting and you kind of have to embrace the characters, because you don’t have a choice.

I personally tried my best to outfit the characters contrary to their personality, Trevor being the suave, nicely dressed one and Michael dressed like a bum, but you still are stuck to their pre determined roles. That’s where I lost interest

Franklin is the least shitty protagonist as he controls the ending of the story, but he feels a bit bland. I read that in the end he can pick a side, but for most of the story you’re tired to the two stereotypical guys.

I remain curious why the Trinity of characters was chosen in the first place. It waters down the quality of the story, making one lose interest in the main arc, how redeeming it may be.

Just like in Cyberpunk I would just ignored it. To me these romantic interactions are time waster in these games. Glad we have a choice there too.
