Hi! Im looking for a series like Jack reacher. Lone wolf, tough guy character, small town settings, helps people in need. Id prefer left-wing authors but ill settle for non-left wing. I know thats a big ask. Thank you!

Librarian here. I love doing readers advisory. The Dave Robicheaux novels by James Lee Burke. The Joe Pickett novels by CJ Box. Cork O’Connor novels by William Kent Krueger. Can’t speak for their personal politics but I think the Box novels tend to lean more conservative and the others more liberal/social issues. Hope this helps.

I read somewhere that CJ Box is conservative. I’ve been wanting to check out William Kent Krueger so I might add his books to my list.

Can’t speak to his politics but the Joe Kurtz series by Dan Simmons starting with the book Hardcase was a pretty great tough guy/lone wolf type series

The very same! He wrote in a ton of different genres, and I’ve enjoyed most all his work. Hopefully he’s not a total dirtbag

Hopefully he [was] not a total dirtbag

He was a Teaparty Republican: heavy on the Islamphobia; global warming denial; wrote a book called ‘Flashback’ in which progressive policies, universal healthcare, insufficient support of Israel, and Barack Obama all lead to the destruction of America; etc.

Ah, beans. Thanks for informing me. Flashback was an interesting one. I enjoyed it from the dystopian action sci-fi aspect of it. The politics were a bit heavy handed for sure. Whelp, guess he’s on his way to being dirt or hanging out on someone’s mantle by now, so it can’t get any worse

Kinda stretching things here, but if you don’t mind some fantasy in your mix, Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series is oddly Reacher-ish. It’s a very similar character type, just with supernatural elements thrown in. I can’t say there’s much politics mentioned at all, but the main character is okay with his girlfriend seeing women instead of and alongside him, so I’d definitely say it isn’t right wing.

But that series hits the same kind of itch for the whole tough guy taking no shit vibe for me.
