Today Doug Ford will attack Toronto’s autonomy, and choice for safe streets. As well as our right to choose how we get around our city, and to do so without getting hurt or risking our own safety.

Get ready Ford. There are FAR more cyclists now compared to 2012.

Oct 13. Tom Riley Park Parking Lot. 5pm-late. Bring food, water and layers.

Be prepared to arrive earlier in case crews try to do a sneak attack removing protect lanes and infrastructure.

This fight is more than just about bike lanes.

It’s about demanding municipal governments be respected, and fighting an authoritarian who believes he can do anything against a city’s own wishes.

This is your Dutch moment Toronto!

Show up to show your support!

Cyclists are still, as far as I know, entitled to take the full car lane.

It’d be really unfortunate if, now that there’s no separated infrastructure, a constant parade of casual cyclists had to get down that road somehow using the car lanes… say for an entire day in shifts…

This doesn’t play the way you think. A cyclist weighs at best 100 kg, against 2500 kg of combustion vehicles.
You may be in the right, but you are against entitled criminals at the wheel.

Yeah, no shit. That’s what we are dealing with anyway. You think they behave better when we’re riding in the gutter? The difference is not worth discussing. The middle of the lane is the safest place for a cyclist.

My e-bike cost 1500 dollars, and it’s pretty flash. That might sound like a lot of money, but the cheapest 90s Mitsubishi I could find at a used dealership was 4000. I didn’t have 4000 dollars, but I had 1500. I love My bicycle and I love bike lanes. Fuck cars.

Dumb question maybe, but on which pretense can the province force the city of Toronto ? I know laws can be voted, but surely you can’t come up with a law that says “No bike lanes in Toronto”…?

Canada has a strange system where the province has total supremacy over city decisions. In my opinion it’s a very backwards way to do things but I don’t live there so…

I am a daily commuter cyclist and I do believe you are overreaching. The user to whom you replied, should be allowed to lie. Their lies should be countered with arguments, not censorship. Besides, lying is not against the rules of this community.

Misinformation (along with bad-faith argumentation in general) is uncivil and thus violates Rule 1. I do consider context and often give the user benefit of the doubt that they might have just been ignorant or mistaken (which is when I let other replies correct them), but this instance – combined with the bigotry, remember – was egregious and obviously purposeful trolling.

I’m a poor trans mentally ill person. I ride a bicycle for many reasons. Two of those reasons is that it’s cheaper than a car, and My disabilities make it difficult to drive. The others mostly have to do with a sense of ethical responsibility and hatred of cars.

I don’t like being run over by cars, so bike lanes are pretty nice for Me personally. I think it’s pretty disgusting how you framed your anti-bicycle agenda as feminist, antiracist, and pro-worker. It’s a good thing the mods removed it.

I bet you’re wealthy enough to own a car, and you’re happy to poison the air that poor people breathe, just to get to work faster.

        Sorry for your situation.

I hardly think limiting human travel to foot, horse or bike (until we can get clean energy to scale - and those efforts will require the use of chemstry and other poisons) will be a net benefit to you or anyone else.

The reality is that a world without modern tech like poisonous cars, poisonous planes, poisonous packaging, poisonous fertilizers, and factory farms will support somewhere between 1 and 3 billion people.

Do the people in this group get to pick which of the 8 billion currently alive people get to not starve?

My position is that bike lanes are great, where they make sense.

I am down with trying them on for size to see if they help.

My city is full of them, but the greenways get used to a large extent but the on most of the the rest you will see one bike every six months.

Furthermore, when you do see bikers on those roads with bike lanes, they ride out in traffic anyway because it is their right and how do you put it? Oh yeah, fuck cars.

This group is hurting your cause not helping.

These are just things you’ve convinced yourself of to make you feel better. You’re manufacturing a scenario where people have to die if you don’t have a car. It’s ridiculous.

It’s about how you live, not how many. Anything is possible under science based centralized planning

Humanity is sustainable. “Free market” capitalism is not sustainable. These are VERY different things.

It’s not mostly «rich white men» who cycle. In fact, if it was, then the «rich white man» mayor would think twice before removing the bike lanes.

Clearly coming from someone who has never once paid attention to the people who cycle. Cycling infrastructure is essential for the poor who don’t own cars.

How is pointing out that people who don’t own cars need ways to get around a strawman? It directly undermines the point you were making.

Most urban cyclists are not rich white men. The Lycra crowd usually sticks to recreational trails or more rural or suburban roads.

Edit: just to add some data here.

A better way to look at the distribution is to consider the median income of bike commuters, relative to other commuters.  The median bike commuter had a household income of about $72,000 according to this data series, meaning about half of all bike commuters have household incomes less than that amount and half have more.  To put than in context, the median car commuter had a household income of about $82,000.  So, on average, bike commuters live in lower income households than car commuters.  For reference, the median bus commuter lived in a household with an income of about $62,000.

TLDR it’s actually car commuters that are the wealthier demographic. So if your concern for the poor was genuine, you would support more bike lanes. But somehow I doubt you will change your tune…
