I had a great great uncle who got into Tennessee politics in the late 1800s. He told my grandfather “the trick is: own enough land that you can get people to work it for you, so they can farm enough for everything you need above what they’re gonna eat.” Once he established that position, he had all the time in the world to campaign, become the Mayor, etc. Old school landlord strategy.

Even if it’s 40 hours (European Work Time Directive), it still takes up a significant portion of life with commuting to/from work in your own time, preparing for work and mentally recovering from work after.

Definitely varies. A lot of employers expect 9-5 plus hours after work to the tune of more like 60.

There’s many countries where that’s technically illegal but happens constantly and you’ll lose your job if you don’t do it.

And there’s European countries where the 13-hour shift as part of a 53 hour 6-day workweek is explicitly legal (🇬🇷). (Before overtime)

Without taking into account commutes, rest, and an extra two hours (6*20mins) a week of unpaid “mandatory” break throughout the week, in the middle of your shifts. That no employer has forced anyone to work through, ever.

Not to mention our friends, family and communities. It seems we cannot mildly inconvenience ourselves by boycotting. It’s a shame because we could take down several entities this way.
