I don’t know if this is the right community, but I suppose it’s close enough.

You can’t even make posts like this on Reddit anymore, Reddit has become such a hog on the internet traffic it’s ridiculous. It wouldn’t be a problem if Reddit didn’t take such precious internet space.

They censor people, regular people who aren’t even doing anything too controversial. Reddit’s automated filers constantly remove people’s posts, only conformist content is allowed there, and so nothing of value remains. Just generic conformist post after another generic conformist post.

Why is this platform still popular is honestly just beyond me at this point. No really, can someone please, please explain to me why do people keep using this broken website anymore?

Same reason people still use Twitter.

Same reason people still use Facebook.

Same reason people still use Discord.

Same reason people still use TikTok.

    Etc.

It is extraordinarily difficult to move an entire community. The inertia is so strong. That’s why all these companies can ceaselessly enshittify without facing any real consequences.

Look at startrek.website. That was a concerted effort by a major subreddit’s mods to migrate over to Lemmy. And it worked! Sort of. The subreddit still has many times more users.

The choice for most isn’t “use <corporate hellhole> or <something else>”. The choice is “participate in your communities or don’t”. It’s not really surprising that most people want to stay in their communities.

And it’s not just online communities, either. I am consequentially disconnected from my real-world local community because I absolutely will not use Facebook.

Also, reddit won’t allow a sub’s mods to permanently close any major sub. So you can’t say, “We’re moving the community to Lemmy and it will be closed and unavailable here.” The reddit admins will come in, appoint new mods (probably some of the same shitty powermods that moderate 1000 other subs), and turn the sub back on, allowing inertia-locked users to stay there and maintain the inertia.

I was permanently banned after providing info on safety when protesting. Like I can’t even start a new account my IP and devices are locked out, I get permabanned immediately.
