Could you recommend a good FOOS app for managing Contacts and SMS on android? I want to get rid of all those Google apps.

Edit: I am gonna give a try to Fossify

I use Fossify Contacts, Messages, Calendar, Gallery and Voice Recorder.

Alternatively take a look around F-Droid, there’s plenty more :)

I am assuming you would have to manually export contacts to a cloud location, import into Fossify and then do occasional cloud syncs?

Am I understanding this correctly? Would love to move away from Google contacts (every little step helps).

The (Fossify) contracts contacts app is independent from the location you store your contacts. You could e.g. keep storing them on Google although that’s probably not your intention.
If you don’t want to store the contacts locally on your device, than you’d need to export them as vcards and then import them into a new CardDAV server of your choice, e.g. Nextcloud, Baikal, SoGo, …
Access and synchronization needs then to be configured in the Android native ‘Accounts & Synchronization’ settings or using DAVx5.

I use Davx to sync with my mailbox.org account, but I also use SD Contacts (on FDroid). It automatically exports contacts to the SD card when there are changes. This is useful when first setting up a phone, or setting up a phone with no sync functions like DAV.

Cool, I didn’t know it expots changes automatically. I’ve always thought, it was for devices where the contacts app doesn’t have an export function.

I see. I vaguely remember testing out CardDev 10+ years ago. To start with even switching the client would be good.

          Cheers!
