Andy Yen’s values are incompatible with Proton’s mission. He advocates for poor security practices, supports fascists, and he verbally abuses his subordinates. As such, I can no longer in good conscience continue to financially support a company with such terrible leadership.

Unfortunately for me, my subscription just renewed last month on a multi year plan, but it does give me time to browse for and experiment with alternatives.

If you’re able, I encourage you to do the same and cite Andy Yen as the driving factor for your decision. We can’t let these tech bro fascists destroy what little semblance of privacy we have left.

Fuck that. Set your location to Europe, California, or New York, and then demand they cancel your subscription and provide a prorated refund. Vote with your money.

Sure. The US states mentioned have “right to cancel” laws. You don’t need to fool proton. You tell them you reside in New York or California, and ask them politely if you can cancel for a prorated refund. Many businesses will just say yes because it’s easier than dealing with it. If they steadfastly refuse, then there is little you can do unless they try to break/change their agreement. Ask them!

Fwiw, we don’t (yet, it’s coming into force next year) have that right in the UK and they are refunding me anyway. They extended the refund period a couple of weeks to give me a chance to migrate away as well. The whole experience emailing them made me wonder if their customer support is just sick of the company by now because it felt like customer support were almost glad to get another refund through

Go to Tuta if you do not want to selfhost. But take your own email domain. If tuta also turns to shit, you still control your addresses and the next migration will be easy as hell.
A Domain can cost as low as 1€ per Month and the Tuta + Own Domain Setup is easy and set-and-forget.
