Make sure you use a smart search and replace tool, though. I still remember many years later reading a story with a protagonist named Virginia, and then hitting a scene with a bunch of commentary about a character’s “vaVirginia”. It was memorable both for the “suddenly pornography” element of it and also the “ah, in an earlier draft of this story the protagonist’s name used to be shortened to Gina!” realization.

Its kind of the other way around, but it reminds me of the D&D handbook version where they scrapped the name “mage” and instead went with “wizard” but were lazy about the find and replace process, so you had weapons doing “1d6 piercing dawizard” on a successful hit.

I’ve done this in some fanfics. I can’t handle fics that make Harry Potter a girl and don’t bother to change the name.
