i copied the exe file to my linux mint 22.1 system and added the game as a non steam game. it installed, but the game won’t run

using steam i’ve tried proton 9.0-4 and also proton hotfix and proton 3.16-9 just for giggles I tried unchecking “force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool”

when i click on the game in steam the green “play” button switches to a blue “stop” button but then just goes back to a green “play” button.

i’m thinking it’s to old for steam to be able to run it. (maybe?)

any thoughts on another way to get this old as hell game to run?

edit: should say that the version of the game I am running is Flux . there are other versions like Flux LE and flux uplink and other versions. mine is just Flux (which was the full version of the game.)

Do you mean old like DOS old, or you meant something like old Windows game?

If it’s something like an old DOS game I’d maybe try DOSBox… maybe there’s something better but that’d be on the list of things to try.

EDIT: FreeDOS also exists, should be able to run that in an emulator / virtual machine and then load anything DOS compatible into it. There’s a list of emulators / virtual machines they recommend in their download page https://freedos.org/

Another option for the steam thing is adding the following to the additional launch settings:

    gamemoderun %command%

I’m pretty sure Mint comes with it already set up, and it’s made the difference between “working” and “not working” for me before.

You could try using Lutris or Bottles and see if either of them help. As a last resort, just running it through Wine after fiddling with the settings might work, but it’s a long shot.

EDIT: found this page that talks about a DLL that’s needed to make it work on Windows 10. Assuming it’s the game you’re talking about, that might help make it work.

ok i downloaded that .dll file and put it into my flux directory, but bottles gives an error

          Flux

          Run-time error’91’:

Object variable or With block variable not set

if i hit the ok button on the error window there is an error window behind it that says

          Flux error

An error has occurred while trying to initialize DirectX. If you continue to experience problems, please report the following to technical support:

Application reports ‘ActiveX component can’t create object’

I"m not sure where to go from here. any help is appreciated.
