The federal government no longer prohibits contractors from having "segregated facilities."

In a public memo issued by the General Services Administration, the federal government no longer prohibits contractors from having segregated waiting rooms, restaurants, and water fountains.

The memo specifically read, “When issuing new solicitations or contracts do not include any of the following provisions and clauses… Prohibition of Segregated Facilities.”

The repealed “segregation clause” was prompted by President Donald Trump’s executive order on DEI, which also rescinded President Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1965 order that provided “equal opportunity in Federal employment"

The clause (THIS was taken OUT) reads, “The Contractor agrees that it does not and will not maintain or provide for its employees any segregated facilities at any of its establishments, and that it does not and will not permit its employees to perform their services at any location under its control where segregated facilities are maintained.”

      Unfortunately true. It’s disturbing to see the non-policy-related causes from that page:

      Police discrimination (a crime)

      Vandalism (a crime)

      Discriminatory housing practices (currently a crime)

      Gentrification (a market effect)

      Supplemented with actual policy change. They don’t need the help.

      In this age of ubiquitous phone cameras and instant social judgement, I look forward to the backlash as racists reveal themselves.

      In 2019, sociologist Heather O’Connell wrote that sundown towns are “(primarily) a thing of the past”.[25] However, historian James W. Loewen notes persisting effects of sundown towns’ violently enforced segregation even after they may have been integrated to a small degree, a phenomenon he called “second-generation sundown towns.”

      I don’t see anything in the linked article to suggest we “still have fucking sundown towns.”

        Look instead for the reported causes. The effect “is sundown town or not” might be difficult to conclusively prove or disprove. The causes are sometimes documented though.

      Ugh that’s such an overblown stereotype, sure Podunk shit hole towns in the middle of nowhere arent fun to be in, but they’re mentioned so much on here and reddit like it’s some commonplace landscape that you’ve got to avoid at all costs.

      The reality is you’d have to go out of your way to go to these places, they’ve always sucked and they’ll always suck. That’s self segregation not mandated segregation.

        Lynching was often not mandated segregation, as well; 🙄. This is the problem when you don’t listen to the lived experiences of and lessons learned by marginalized people.
