My first bike build journey has officially started: the frame I wrote about some days ago is on its way, and the wheels just came in! I hope you appreciate a couple of close-ups.
Model and specs:
- Mavic Cosmic SL 45
- Inner width: 23mm
- Weight (manufacturer spec): 1555g/pair
- Weight (measured, with tape but without valves): 1601g
Any comment is appreciated!
Good start.
I missed your earlier post. Those Atheos frames are insane. I weighed an Atheos Comp the other day at ~7 kg with wheels, tires, saddle, etc. And it wasn’t even an S-works frame. I kind of want that bike now.
Yeah in size 58 I’m expecting little over 7kg ride-ready (without bottles, gps computer and saddle bag actually). I’ll post updates soon, the frame came in yesterday :)
I have no experience with that set of wheels, but my CAAD12 came with a set of low end Mavics. They were decent. I had about 12k miles (~20,000 km) on them before I had any issues at all with no maintenance, other than the occasional straightening. When I did have to work on the rear hub, I found them easy to work on even for someone who hadn’t done it before. A friend of mine had an older set of the same wheel that had something like 80,000 miles (128,000 km) on them before he started having issues…which is just insane. It’s a wonder his brake tracks didn’t wear out.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find or fix the issue I was having - every now and then, while coasting, I’d get a grinding sound and it would slow down, for a few moments. For an old set of wheels that I could replace for $300, it wasn’t worth spending much time or money on them. But I have no complaints; they served me well for many years, on all kinds of surfaces. Hopefully yours will give similar reliable service!
Sounds good!
Sound check needed xD nice wheels though.
Of the ratchet or the carbon? :)
I like them! I could have paid less for lighter and probably stiffer wheels by 9Velo, Lightbicycle or Elite but these don’t look too bad of a deal.
I meant of the ratchet :D
