My first bike build journey has officially started: the frame I wrote about some days ago is on its way, and the wheels just came in! I hope you appreciate a couple of close-ups.
Model and specs:
- Mavic Cosmic SL 45
- Inner width: 23mm
- Weight (manufacturer spec): 1555g/pair
- Weight (measured, with tape but without valves): 1601g
Any comment is appreciated!
I have no experience with that set of wheels, but my CAAD12 came with a set of low end Mavics. They were decent. I had about 12k miles (~20,000 km) on them before I had any issues at all with no maintenance, other than the occasional straightening. When I did have to work on the rear hub, I found them easy to work on even for someone who hadn’t done it before. A friend of mine had an older set of the same wheel that had something like 80,000 miles (128,000 km) on them before he started having issues…which is just insane. It’s a wonder his brake tracks didn’t wear out.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find or fix the issue I was having - every now and then, while coasting, I’d get a grinding sound and it would slow down, for a few moments. For an old set of wheels that I could replace for $300, it wasn’t worth spending much time or money on them. But I have no complaints; they served me well for many years, on all kinds of surfaces. Hopefully yours will give similar reliable service!
Sounds good!
