did you know that mitochondria has is own distinct DNA code, not only it’s own DNA but it uses a different codon code than nuclear DNA. and that us has only a couple dozen genes, most of those are tRNA for it’s own DNA code?

yes, they were at some point free living bacteria, that was engulfed by another cell, and instead of being digested, they become symbiotic.

another fun trivia, they discovered a parasite that infects mitochoria of ticks ovums, and called them “Midichloria mitochondrii” after star wars midichlorians.
