Shoutout to u/theFallenWalnut on Reddit
Why isn’t SoundCloud included in Spotify alternatives?
Good question. Probably because it isn’t a conventional music streaming service?
Thank you for the answer! I’m curious, how do you define “conventional”?
Isn’t SoundCloud more like a social network for music?
Yes it has social features like DMs and comments, but its music catalogue is bigger than others, since it allows everyone to upload
Have to check it out again. I wonder if there is a federated alternative out there.
There’s funkwhale: https://www.funkwhale.audio/
Oh yeah right. Wanted to check them out for a long time.
Proton CEO is supporting the fascists.
2025-01-16 - Proton CEO supports business policies of republicans
2025-01-28 - Proton Mail says it’s “politically neutral” while praising Republican Party
And they’ve pulled out of the Fediverse.
2025-02-26 - Proton has stopped using their Mastodon account
2025-01-28 - Proton Mail says it’s “politically neutral” while praising Republican Party
Anything short of anti-fascist is fascist. “Politically neutral” is nothing but a lie.
That’s correct, and I’m critical of them too. But they haven’t compromised the values they promote up to this point. Only the future will tell if it stays that way.
And they’ve pulled out of the Fediverse.
That’s unfortunate. Let’s bring them back by strengthening and growing the fediverse!
My girlfriend and I switched from Amazon Music to Deezer recently, and it’s the bomb.
Hey! Do you mind if I translate this pic to Italian and repost it?
I’ve just reposted it from Reddit. So I’m not the creator. But you find the username of them in the post text :)
You should not recommend any Chromium-based browsers, as even if they try to be independent from Google, they still contribute to Google’s hegemony over web standards.
I understand that. But where do we draw the line for open source projects? I’m all for boycotting Chrome. But not Chromium, a real open source project.
It depends on what alternatives there are, but I, for one, try to draw the line at the point where the project is controlled by and/or designed to serve the corporation I’m trying to boycott.
It’s kinda like how the M$ fanbois say “Microsoft loves open source now” but then when you look into what projects they’re contributing to, it’s all middleware for getting Free Software to run on top of Microsoft stuff and other self-serving shit like that.
Being open source is a necessary condition for a software project to be considered good and beneficial to society, but it is not sufficient in and of itself.
@tfm @toolsontech how can I save the pic and post it on LI?
@heleenkuiper @toolsontech on the web you simply right click and hit “save image”
@heleenkuiper @tfm in my mobile client I can usually click the image and hit the download arrow top right.
@toolsontech @tfm yes I normally do that. Didn’t see it. But it worked!
F-droid and aurora play store are good alternatives to Google play
Ms office to libreoffice at the end so people don’t give up early when they reach that step ;)
Also putting ‘privacy’ on vivaldi is odd, as it’s not open source
Nice, but Firefox, Tidal and Bluesky should not be listed for obvious reasons.
What are the obvious reasons?
Firefox for the recent privacy issues (they removed the promise that they’ll never sell users’ data, lots of online debates about this).
Tidal was owned by Jay Z (billionaire) and had some controversies around music quality, inflating play counts, plus the free option is only for the US if I’m not mistaken.
Bluesky is “decentralized” but has one instance. “No billionaires” but is funded by crypto bros. It’s going to enshittify very quickly. It’s better than nazi twitter, but Mastodon exists so why bother.
Thanks for letting me know. What alternative to Firefox would you recommend? I want to stay away from chromium. I don’t know a lot about Librewolf. Do you know if that one’s worth looking into?
Librewolf seems to be a good alternative for Firefox. Specially for privacy issues.
Jay-Z sold most of his majority stake to Jack Dorsey/Square but not all. He retained 20% of his shares and AFAIK is still involved with Tidal.
Qobuz is another music streaming and download service. I haven’t tried it yet but have kept it on my radar.
Qobuz seems interesting too as it’s non US. But I always used Deezer so never got the chance to try it.
I looked at them when I was ready to ditch Spotify. The only reason I didn’t go with them was because Tidal and Deezer were cheaper.
