Do a poll of the community?
I disliked Threadiverse as well, for the identical reason, and pushed for Forumverse (ironically in a post that Rimu mentioned to me did not federate properly for several days, so it did not get much traction). But… nowadays I use Threadiverse, bc very established people (like Ada) have already been using it for years, and there doesn’t seem to be much of a practical reason to get people to change.
Tbf, Lemmy used the term before Meta tried to put their dirty mugs on it. Why allow Meta to define us?
I’ll use whatever people decide on though. That said, now that I switched to using Threadiverse, I do kinda like it. We speak in Threads
Edit: that Comment button is way too close to the bottom of the editing window 😔. Anyway, we speak in Threads, and it rolls off the tongue more readily (in English) than Forumverse. So that’s something to consider.
Also, for awhile I was saying “(Threadi-)verse”, as in The Verse. But yeah nobody seemed to get it.
Strangely i find more difficult to prounouce theadiverse than forumverse. 😅
It’s not that meta define us. Lot words changed over time due to our perception : as Deaf/Sumain, Queer, Handicap…it’s our perception that defined them.
Anyway, i hope it won’t boost the research of Meta app because we used threadiverse. I don’t want to freely market their word.
Isn’t Meta defunct now? Someone told me that anyway…
I looked it up and I suppose technically it still exists, but only just barely.
These are all the exact things I brought up in my post, and others have both before and since. Whatever we want to call the subset of the Fediverse that encompasses forums/threads seems quite controversial.
I suppose it’s back to Lemmy+PieFed+Mbin then.😜
For Interstellar, I just say it’s an “Mbin/Lemmy/PieFed app”. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but it works :)
And in that case, it’s actually better by virtue of being more precise. e.g. Thunder can handle Lemmy, I believe not Mbin at all, and while PieFed support should eventually come (soon?) I don’t think it’s ready yet.
So yeah, that’s perfect, keep doing that!:-)
(Edit: it’s so fantastic to see Interstellar, and the Threadiverse/Forumverse/Whatever, keep growing as it’s been doing lately! 😁)
Maybe we are misunderstanding each other. I’m talking about Meta the company behind facebook, whatsapp…😅
Facebook won’t die anytime because lot association and market created their buissness page there. All my Deafs friend use meta for their groups…
Whatsapp is very very popular. For example in spain and other countries.
Maybe people doesn’t comment that much but they read, like, share their contact, watch video…
I think we should take action. They will lose their beloved app, they may not enjoy the new one. But for geopolitical reason, we shouldn’t allow those spywares in our territory and push common software : free software.
For the name, you can do a poll here. PieFed allow us creating a nice poll. And i saw a creative use of poll with interactive fiction. :)
Okay: poll created! The functionality does look very nice, and is quite visually appealing as well 🙂.
Sorry, instead of “Meta” being defunct, I meant “Meta’s Threads”. And yes, I left Facebook a long time ago, but others remain, as they choose.
I hope it is really defunct 😊
They have 350 billions of users 😨
Active though?
We can see that as an opportunity though - the hunger for something is there, if we can provide a viable alternative for them to use.
Such as PieFed:-). I haven’t tried Friendica but that too.
Well, if you tell them about us, irl, maybe.
I told my familly to leave facebook after showing them various news. They didn’t move. I also told them about free software, they didn’t move.
Beside, Meta will hide any competitors from its timeline.
I’ve told people irl about Lemmy. 100% of them - not joking - have actively reprimanded me for having done so.
I did not realize at the time that a Google search - not DuckDuckGo or Kagi, but mainstream normies will ofc use Google - pulls up Lemmy.ml as the top instance (DuckDuckGo pulls up Lemmy.world, as the largest and most traffiked, but Google seems to prioritize other metrics such as age or whatever?).
And lemmy.ml, by default, to a guest not logged in, shows posts from Local rather than All.
So the whole page is just filled with posts making fun of Westerners, for such innocuous things as having bank accounts, saying that we all need to be beheaded bc we are all “landlords” if we own any stock (I don’t btw, but since when have “facts” ever mattered to a tankie?). Especially prior to any democratic election in any Western nation, the content there is extremely blatant disinformation, of the BoTh SiDeS sAmE variety. We should NOT be sending people there, but by calling what we are as “Lemmy”, that is what ends up happening.
And it is not just me: Reddit’s r/RedditAlternatives is filled with such stories. It helps that Blaze mentions “Discuss.Online” to Redditors as a good instance for them to join. That one has defederated from Hexbear and Lemmygrad.ml at least, shows posts from All rather than Local to a guest account, and by distancing somewhat from the Lemmy name, it allows people to be freed from that preconceived notion as they check out our actual content. And yeah, anti-Western propaganda still shows up, but at least it’s not quite as prevalent as going directly to Lemmy.ml and showing solely Local rather than All.
The Threadiverse/Forumverse/Whatever is never going to grow if we keep allowing ourselves to be a Nazi bar. Though offering a side entrance does help a little.
