Summary
A Georgia jury ordered Bayer, Monsanto’s parent company, to pay $2.1 billion in damages to John Barnes, who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from using Roundup weed killer.
The award includes $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages, marking one of the largest settlements in Roundup litigation.
Bayer, which acquired Monsanto in 2018, plans to appeal, disputing claims that Roundup’s key ingredient, glyphosate, causes cancer despite ongoing legal battles and scientific controversy.
The company faces over 177,000 lawsuits and has allocated $16 billion for settlements.
The fine should be liquidation of the entire company and redistributing that wealth back into the economy.
They have known their pesticides have caused cancer since the 80s and decided to force every farmer in the country to use it.
Should triple that fine.
They’ve allocated $16B. Isn’t that basically an admission of guilt? Doesn’t really seem an act of someone who’s convinced they are innocent Should have fined them the full amount at once
Not really: just gotta plan for the business to go bust, just in case.
Best to assume the worst and hope for the best.

Huh? They dispute the claims despite scientific controversy? I guess if there’s a controversy it means one side has overwhelming evidence.
I still don’t get what they thought, buying Monsanto of all the companies they could have bought.
By purchasing Monsanto, Bayer is far and away the largest agriculture company in the world.
And they bought a liability.
They bought SOME liability.
And a bad name. At least in Germany this wasn’t perceived as a good idea.
Imagine how juicy of a deal it is if it was worth all the bad will AND litigations. Is Bayer still German? Funny how a leader in GMO can be based in Europe now.
pro tip if you ever need weed killer spray concentrated (30% ish) vinegar on your weeds. Kills em overnight and no glyphosate near your house
However, the 30% vinegar is quite toxic to the humans applying it. I bought some to try out after reading the label I decided to abandon the idea.
It is so weird to mention Monsanto in this headline.
