I recently played through Fallout 1 and 2 for the first time and I was surprised how much I enjoyed them. They’re still really good games, although there was some noticeable jank and some quests that were straight up broken or didn’t have an ending.
I loved the random encounters while traveling the wasteland. Some really weird and funny stuff.
I am biased, but IMO Fallout 1/2 set the template for roleplaying focused RPGs. Something similar to how Half-Life 1/2 radically transformed the FPS genre from its Doom origins, with all modern FPS games being on some level derived from HL.
It is a shame Bethesda refused to learn from Black Isle / Obsidian how to tell the story. Simple comparison between F3 and FNV show what difference it makes.
BTW I personally think F2 was better than F1.
Agreed, FO2 was the better game (both the narrative structure and a slightly better UI/UX), but it’s clear that it’s strength were derived from the accomplishments of FO1.
