We have had lots of comments from European capitals today, all remarkable for how little they actually say.
However, through the vagaries of language, you can feel a palpable sense of European discomfort and an unspoken realisation that their ally, their longtime protector, is doing things they can’t condone.
We have heard from the EU foreign policy chief saying that the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected. Spain has urged de-escalation, moderation and respect for international law. Germany has expressed great concern about the situation.
What we don’t have in any of that is any full condemnation.
European leaders know that a charge of hypocrisy is very easy to make against them if they don’t condemn it, and that’s basically because for years, the Europeans have been condemning Russia for its actions in Ukraine, and now its longtime partner and ally is doing things that you could also say were violations of international law and violations of sovereignty.
When Russia does it, European leaders call it aggression. When the US does it, it’s complicated.

Oh no not being accused of hypocrisy.
Someone told me the worst part is the hypocrisy, and I disagreed. I thought it was the raping.
TBH it’s not like a condemnation would make any difference… it would only enrage emperor Trump and expose EU countries (and possibly Ukraine) to his majesty’s retaliations.
The sad truth is that - regardless of Trump - Europe can’t currently afford to piss off the US… so the only response can be putting on a good face, buying time, and growing stronger for next time.
This is not to say that all EU leaders are actually playing the long game (eg. Italy’s Melony said that US attack on Venezuela was a legitimate act of self defense) and, no, I’m not gonna shed any tears for Maduro or his regime.

Luckily things are actually moving in Europe. Hope it isn’t too late.
This will also likely further increase the push for an independent nuclear deterrent in many European capitals, but I don’t really know how to feel about that.

I remember i talked to my dad about this like 6 months ago.
I said: “when russia invades, it’s considered the worst event that could possibly happen. everybody loses their shit about it and everybody cries from the top of their lungs that russia is an aggressor and a rapist because it doesn’t respect the territorial integrity of another country. but when the us does it, nobody even bats an eye. that happened in vietnam, it happened in the middle east, and it will happen again.”
my dad just replied: “we’ll see, it’s a learning process, and next time us invades someone, everybody will cry about it too and condemn it, just like this russian invasion is condemned.”
