That part does sound fun at least. We do enjoy complex and nuanced magic systems that go into detail. One reason we enjoyed The Magicians is because of that, they really went out of their way to show how magic worked, though we didn’t like that magic was based on pain in that world.
I’m not sure I’d call it nuanced. It is however very complex, probably more complex than that of any other game; in fact people learn new stuff after thousands of hours of game time.
But if it doesn’t appeal to you because of other factors, these will probably not make up for it
