New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsement of Governor Kathy Hochul for reelection has sparked a backlash from progressives, including some of the mayor’s closest allies.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, endorsed Hochul, a centrist, in an op-ed in The Nation on Thursday, acknowledging their political differences but saying he has “come to trust Governor Hochul as someone willing to engage in an honest dialogue that leads to results.”
Mamdani’s decision has prompted criticism from fellow members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), with State Senator Jabari Brisport telling City & State “even Zohran gets it wrong sometimes.”
I didn’t speak English or know much about US politics when Obama was first elected, but based on my limited reading on the topic Mamdani truly seems to be a new Obama. Not judging people for falling for him, he’s charismatic and he said all the right things at the beginning (even if he started backtracking before even winning)
He’s more progressive than Obama ever was.
During the '08 election, I was a vibes based Dem. Obama, before he went mask off, feels like Mamdani now. But Mamdani actually has policies laided out to do some good. If he stays true to his word and actually accomplishes something, he will be infinitely better than the “Yes, we can!” progressive leader to drone bombing commander and chief.
New York City is beholden to the Governor of New York for a lot of stuff. Governor has a huge amount of authority over the MTA, Metro North, tolls into the City and I’m pretty a huge amount of city tax revenue is only authorized by the governor. It makes a lot of sense to be friendly even if she is a neo-liberal ghoul. An endorsement is pretty much the least he can do.
Unclean! Unclean!
no shit. god forbid there could be space to get some important progressive agendas passed here. as the kids say “let the man cook”. we can burn him at the stake later, if need be.
He’s kicking the DSA ladder down behind him but sure. Zohran is going to fix all of politics by sucking up to centrists and keeping them in power.
