    Cargo-only.

    Brilliant.

I wonder how many millions of people never though of doing that…

The French post office used to have TGV sets dedicated to carrying mail. (Not sure if they were just a passive freight carrier or a mobile sorting office like the Night Mail in early-20th-century Britain.)

Though the idea of freight-only Shinkansens dates back all the way back to the 60s or so…

Always funny to look these routes up. 500km, six hour drive in a car or two hour trip in a Shinkansen. In the west, this would be the other way around.

Hopefully they find more use for this once it gets going to get it beyond one trip a day. It would be interesting if they reach enough demand to run it around the clock.

France, Italy and Spain are upset not to be called Western countries. Even if Spanish station security checks try their best to make it slower.

I just took a poll and Canada has agreed to accept France, Italy, and Spain in exchange for the current neighbours to the south. Please let me know when to expect delivery, hopefully station security takes an early lunch.

Y tho? Isn’t capacity way more important than speed for freight? And also, 500km is nothing, why dedicate that to a few parcels moving really fast, instead of people? People profit way more than freight from very short travel times. That’s why in the EU freight trains are long as hell and they only go 120 because they need to get to their destination within a day which they can accomplish with way less wear and tear to the infrastructure.

For fresh food and high value electronics, speed is often more important than capacity. It sounds like this service will compete with air freight. I think JR knows what they are doing ;-)
