  • I dunno, back in my younger days camping with my family I was always up in the smoke and my clothes were fine. Had long hair, and it was never a bad smell. As I got older and did have a beard, I can’t recall it ever smelling unpleasant the next day, and I’m known for catching even faint smells after years of taking care of patients where faint smells can be a sign of something important.

Maybe it depends on the wood? I know a pure deadfall fire can be stronger smelling, and you can get some strange odors indeed if you buy firewood that’s been sitting, though I can’t think of any that stank.

  • New cane day is nice, if not as nice as new knife day. Or new insert hobby item day by virtue of canes being an unpleasant necessity most of the time.

I don’t have a lot of them. But I also tend to carefully select mine. My main is a cane masters basic version. A handful of folding aluminum ones (including the backup one in the car). One that’s more of a walking stick than a cane by virtue of a head that’s impractical for bearing weight (lumpy skull). Two sword canes; one that’s cheap and decorative, the other useable.

I need to save up and snag a backup cane masters one, but they’ve stopped selling that model, and what they still sell tends to be more aggressive looking, and I prefer something less questionable for the rare visit to places that are restrictive. They’re fairly over priced as well, but there aren’t many companies making canes are the dimensions and handles I prefer, so I’m stuck

Hope your new one gives you many miles :)

  • First, never whine about votes, nor crow about them. It’s just not cool.

Second,I suspect the cause has nothing to do with your edit. More likely, people suspect it’s rage bait rather than a genuine post. I agree, after seeing your responses in comments, and regret having originally upvoted.

That out of the way, I actually only disagree about the idea that it’s the ideal pairings. Age gaps only matter in sex when one person is using their age as a tool of manipulation. But they aren’t automatically better when farther apart. They might be, but there’s a lot to be said for similarities in age cohorts being a better indicator of compatibility than the erroneous assumption that age = skill. You did mention that there are exceptions, I’m using that specific aspect as an example just because it’s easiest.

  • I tend to favor evaluations in this community staying away from the original topic. This is one of those cases where it’s impossible to address without doing so.

I don’t think any reasonable person could read the comments presented and come out with the same take on their content. It was the opposite of apologia, and doesn’t get close enough to zionism to even shoot it in the ass, much less be confused with it.

As such, it would be at least mild PTB with comment removals only. But a ban under that reasoning? No way. Full PTB, and I would even argue that it’s severe enough that the mod in question may need to be removed from their position. I don’t think I’ve ever actually said that here before, about anyone. Thought it a couple of times, but never felt something met my inner threshold that I should say it.

This one? I’m not sure why the mod in question reached the conclusion they did, and I’m trying to wrap my head around it. I just can’t see it being for any acceptable reason. Even if it was a bad day and a misinterpretation, that’s still time to take a step away from moderation, even if temporary. That’s how severe of an overreaction and outright fabrication of cause this one is.

  • Man I fuck wit fire. Well, used to; my old, crippled ass can’t fuck wit much any more.

Point is that being the fire tender isn’t exactly a no skill job, and it comes with some serious benefits.

You gotta have at least a basic understanding of how fire works if you want to keep it going, and learn how to keep it controlled. That’s why fucks-wit-fire is such a coveted, but demanding, position. See, you gotta keep an eyeball on it. Stacking in fresh fuel in the right way. Keeping adequate air flow. Moving unburned fuel into the center. It’s a dance.

And for that effort, you not only get the delightful scent of wood smoke in your beard, and the glow of warmth across your flesh, you get to see the ever shifting beauty of the fire and the embers. A constant flux of colors and lights that seems alive. I’d hypnotic, meditative, and can be a spiritual experience if one leans that way.

Ash, drifting on breeze settles into your hair as sleep looms and you bank the fire, setting things up for the chilly morning to come, you look down at your friend glowing beneath ashes that only reluctantly settle in for the night.

You go to your rest warm, fulfilled, and at peace.

  • Are you talking about pastels? Cray-pas are a fairly reliable brand. Think crayons but a little softer.

But there’s nothing wrong with chalk or crayons tbh. Both are very forgiving in terms of learning curve. You can use both or either at all levels of experience and training to create stuff that can pass muster.

Chalk, however, can be messy and often needs a fixative if you want to keep the end result, so it’s a little more hassle than picking up a box of generic crayons.

As someone else already said, just regular pencils work. There’s a reason that pretty much every form of artist learns to sketch at some point. It’s a fundamental skill in the process of most “genres”, even outside of painting or other 2d art forms. It’s also fun and relaxing once you get the basics under your belt (like shading and blending). You don’t need special stuff either. You can get going with a #2 from anywhere and a used envelope.

Seriously, look at what they use in elementary schools. Crayons, tempera, finger paints and chonky pencils. Low cost, easy to use, easy to clean up, and still capable of more complex work if you want. Any of those will get you rolling
