  • I’ve never seen anyone else looking for bad anime to listen to before! I have a few suggestions:

    • Tales of Byston Well: Garzey’s Wing is possibly the worst dub I’ve ever seen, and I don’t think it was a good show in the original Japanese either. Bonus points for having been directed by someone famous.
    • Cipher (1989): This is basically a 24-minute string of music videos with a bit of English dialogue (the last 15 minutes is behind the scenes stuff). It seems to expect that you’ve already read the manga because it doesn’t seem likely someone would enjoy it otherwise. Has a somewhat bizarre ending.
    • Crystal Triangle: I don’t remember this one too well. I think it was a pretty generic adventure where the main characters just go from place to place chasing a mcguffin and experience various anime action sequences. No clue whether a dub exists for it.
    • The Way of the Househusband: this one is a little sad because it’s based off a really funny manga but it’s basically not animated at all. I don’t actually know if there’s an English dub, but if there is this would be the perfect thing for someone to listen to but not watch.

I should clarify something about Fullmetal Alchemist. There are actually two Fullmetal Alchemist anime. The original aired in 2003 and was quite good for a while, but then about 1/3 of the way through the story it caught up with the source material and had to start making things up. Unfortunately I don’t think it did a great job of that. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was made in 2009 and does a really good job of following the story of the original manga. It probably has the best ending out of all the action/adventure anime I’ve ever seen; I highly recommend it. It also has the best English dub I’ve ever seen in an anime, so that’s also something to consider if you don’t feel like reading subtitles.

  • If you’re looking for another cool fantasy thing I can heartily recommend Delicious in Dungeon. It starts out as a simple adventure where the party is trying to get deeper into the dungeon to resurrect their fallen comrade while scavenging for food along the way. Once it’s taken a few episodes to establish the personalities of the main cast it quickly starts expanding on everything else that’s going on and the adventure gets a bit more complicated. It’s got really cool worldbuilding, character writing, and animation and is easily among my favorites.
