Television@piefed.social•Arkansas Public Television Drops PBSEnglish
17·2 days agoIsn’t it normal for a public services to be „cost”? Schools don’t make profit either, yet are quite beneficial to societies making money in the long run.

Europe@lemmy.dbzer0.com•EU triggers emergency clause to indefinitely immobilise Russian assetsEnglish
1·2 days agoEU as an organisation isn’t equipped to deal with stuff like this, because it wasn’t ever meant to. We don’t have a common foreign policy or even a common budget, yet we expect it to deal militarily with a war between two non-members. I’m not saying this to take a stab at EU. EU does what it can with competencies it has. Individual states passing the buck to EU is just convenient way of not doing much at all unfortunately.

Europe@lemmy.dbzer0.com•EU triggers emergency clause to indefinitely immobilise Russian assetsEnglish
2·3 days agoWell, fine I guess, as long as you start fighting back at some point before they figure out how to take over your capital cities and enslave anyone they can get their hands on including yourselves, which is clearly the fucking plan.
EU is a trade union and doesn’t have tools/powers to have real common foreign policy outside of the mandate for negotiating trade deals. It’s a bit unreasonable to expect for it to be responsible for foreign policy matters like war reparations between other countries, neither of which is an EU member. This line of reasoning at least makes it appear that it’s within EU competence legally to be involved.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Divinity - Official Reveal Trailer | The Game Awards 2025English
185·3 days agoI thought that’s too gruesome but then I saw it was Divinity and that’s about appropriate amount of violence for the series. I’m not sure if it’s the best way to market the game however.

4·4 days agoUS still supplies intel for long range strikes and can bargain by threatening to withhold it. It has plenty to do with Trump.
Now let’s get down to what we used to call “brass tacks.” What do we know? First, I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t believe artificial intelligence has the potential to be one of the biggest technological developments of all time, reshaping both daily life and the global economy.
Does the title refer to the bubble in which author of this thing is?

6·7 days agoWhat’s the alternative? Exit US market and be subject to US sanctions anyway? It’s a company out to make money and not your buddy in the fight against Orange Man.

Technology@lemmy.zip•Digital ID debate: Privacy group warns of 'unprecedented tracking' and 'surveillance'English
32·7 days agoI always get amused by this kind of thing. Governments keep track of you using multiple different IDs already so those rights groups are essentially advocating that data analysts have to join some more tables before getting the results we’re being warned about.

Technology@lemmy.zip•EU's Top Court Just Made It Impossible to Run a User-Generated Platform LegallyEnglish
5·10 days agoNo new impact, because the ruling is about online marketplaces, which pre-scan / moderate every new posting anyway due to multiple legal obligations that exist already. TechCrunch analysis says that the ruling is too broad and applies out of this context but I don’t see it there and the case they’re making isn’t very solid. I think they recognise this as an attack on how ad industry works because checking if the ad is legal before allowing it would be a huge boon to societies worldwide, but also an enormous cost for companies selling ad-spaces.

Hardware@programming.dev•Redditor receives rocks instead of $1200 RTX 5080 GPU, Best Buy investigation finds no issueEnglish
5·10 days agoNot publishing unverifiable claims from anonymous sources is an option too. I understand news pieces like „we’re seeing an uptick in people claiming X” but this is just one random guy making a post on Reddit.

10·12 days agoIt would make sense to sell every IP they can piecemeal to get some return on this investment.
If I had to guess then Saudi (or MBS) wanted EA FC which can now return to being EA FIFA now with extra Ronaldo. Saudi have enough influence over FIFA via PIF to make this happen.

7·12 days ago£3.1m is like a yearly salary for a team of hardware engineers. This sounds like a token investment that looks good in a press release, or a token investment that will go into pockets of someone closely associated. Or both.

10·18 days agoAren’t shootings pretty common in America? Was a matter of time a soldier got shot rather than a kid at school.

They’re not exactly selling it rather than complying with law enforcement requests, which I think most people expect.
