In the end we’re all just hungry little animals

Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes@lemmy.zip•[Discussion] Do you prefer more direct storytelling in your soulslikes or obscure, indirect ways of storytelling?
9·20 hours agoI like the way Miyazaki handles it, makes me feel like I’m really exploring the world and uncovering its secrets. Nothing beats the feeling of making the connection between a random sword’s description and some kind of important figure. And the things I miss, I can probably find in a lore video somewhere.

Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes@lemmy.zip•[Discussion] What's your stance on companions in soulslikes?
5·20 hours agoI don’t know, seems like a thing that’s hard to get right. A Marvel-quip like character would probably take me right out of the usually dark atmosphere of souls likes. Personally, I wouldn’t like a permanent companion that I can’t turn off. I think the Elden Ring system does it well, with optional summons (either spirit ashes, or the NPC summons for fights like Radahn).

science@lemmy.world•‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human bodyEnglish
23·20 hours agoSo, just science being science then? Disagreements have always been a part of science, and always will be. The only important factor is how they are handled. Think a study is flawed? Repeat it, and change the flaws to see if the results differ significantly. But openly discrediting any evidence (for or against a case) without testing is as unscientific as it gets. I believe the person at the end also has a point: yeah, we don’t know if microplastics are as bad as they say, but better safe than sorry.

6·20 hours agoHindsight can be a powerful thing Just because something seemed beneficial or good in the moment, does not mean it actually was. And even if it was, if the guy reflected on it and decided he didn’t support it anymore, that’s his choice to make.

46·21 hours agoForced upgrades (or downgrades) really are the worst. Same for opt-out services instead of opt-in. Give choice back to the customer goddammit!

Biology@mander.xyz•Scientists can now watch plants "breathe" in real time
2·3 days agoIt might, but I think engineering plants to be drought resistant is still a long way off. There’s more to going from C3 to C4 than just stomatal function, like the typical Kranz anatomy of a C4 plant and the extra biochemical steps in their carbon fixation. Then again, some common crops (like corn) are already C4 plants, so it could be possible to make them even more drought resistant. I just don’t know how they’ll ever improve the yield of crops under drought stress, even if they can survive it.
Edit: that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth looking into, of course.
I knew a guy named Michael back in high school. He did in fact not stand up when the teacher called another student’s name. He also never stood up when the teachers asked him too, because Michael was in a fucking wheelchair.

2·3 days agoI think this is a great discovery, but I don’t know if it’s the massive breakthrough the article makes it up to be. Improved water efficiency is great and could cut irrigation costs (if the farmer changes their irrigation method accordingly), but if there’s not enough water in the first place I doubt an improved water use efficiency will do much. Still pretty nice though.
The best thing about caving is that you don’t have to do it. Still, sucks for the guy, his family and his friends.
Losing your house is great for reconnecting with nature I guess

That’s good to know. By time I’m able to get it they’ve probably ironed out some more of the kinks too.
