Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•My entire homelab (server + network gear) consumes as much electricity as a SINGLE incandescent lightbulb used to.English
2·3 days agoMy UPS has a custom built NAS (low tdp ryzen pro and 4 spinny disks), switch, firewall, 3 mini PCs, raspberry pi) plugged into it that are all under decent load and it reports 80W draw. It’s honestly incredible how far computers have come and how we’re living in an age of apartment sized homeland.

I wish there were good alt-shells on Linux. Murex and Nushell are both still pretty nascent to actually use (not for portable scripts but just general day-to-day tasks) - and if it’s something you care about it’s annoying that Nushell is MIT-licensed instead of a free license, which kind of also precludes zsh.
I genuinely kind of miss working a job that required using Windows because PowerShell is genuinely nice to use for throwaway tasks and working in a shell to do things like parsing json, fetching data from a http server, whatever.

4·12 days agoI’d rather the hell of device attestation and TPM stay on Windows and away from Linux. I like having my PC be my computer rather than not be allowed to use hardware/software at the behest of some corporation who can arbitrarily decide I no longer get access.

+1 to beelink but be careful of sketchy resellers. Their website has a direct link to their actual 1st party Amazon storefront that can be tricky to pin down.
I have a fleet of 5 n100/n150 beelinks running k8s that works perfectly well for a super low power homelab. I also replaced the stock m.2 ssds with patriot low power ones but I don’t think the juice is worth the squeeze on that with current pricing.
