This is my favorite anti-anti-vax argument. You won’t take one medicine, here have another with the same medical backing 😂

That’s more disconcerting to me than the ship. Thanks for sharing
Totally valid. I guess it’s a balance between panicking too early (cruise ships are literally just big petrie dishes), and identifying a valid pandemic threat. Either way, for the moment I’m more worried about the mice in my house
Isn’t this just the mouse shit virus? It’s been around forever, if you have a house with mice you have a risk of getting it. The fear is that it’s deadly, not that it spreads rapidly.
Unless this is somehow a new strain, all this story has told me is the company is a running a naaaasty effing ship for 3 ppl to have gotten sick. Will be actively avoiding

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was life like in the United States from 1970 to 2000s?
4·12 days agoThis is such a salient point about how life has, and hasn’t, changed. Your kids could still very well go out on an adventure nowadays and be fine, as most adults still benevolently keep half an eye on kids. But we’re so damn scared of what could happen that we don’t trust the unknown neighbour.
Take away the phone and you see the world hasn’t changed as much as we fear it has (and in some ways it has, not totally discounting the modern world)

While I anticipated some level of self-insert, I’m shocked at how blindsided I am at this

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you had to track someone, what tech would you use?
3·13 days agoOh for sure! From my understanding the In Reach is a phenomenal option, I was more just trying to highlight the options cus I didn’t see it elsewhere. Glad to hear yours has held up over time!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you had to track someone, what tech would you use?
9·13 days agoAlong this vein, there are a variety of backpacking GPS trackers, usually ranging from 200+, IIRC. Made to operate in your pack, they check in intermittently with a noted loved one. Pricier ones also have texting hookups to your phone, and I believe most/all have a panic button
This reads like an ad, I’m sorry lol
I’m a grown adult and currently buzzing with so much energy I might do this tonight to burn off some energy…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•how do I accept that my father is declining?
241·14 days agoThere’s a cognitive offloading effect that happens with AI. I don’t know if it’s been scientifically validated yet, but anecdotally the speed, perceived accuracy and authoritative packaging makes AI easy to trust. A reasonable person could input a “help me evaluate this situation”, and an AI would offer a reasonable-adjacent response. It falls to the user to evaluate the quality of the response, and most ppl are not aware of this caveat. AI is a great tool for situational overviews and perceptive blind spots, but the user is and always should be the final arbiter.
Based solely on the info you shared, your father may not be declining, he may be a victim of being an average AI user.
Is his cognition failing elsewhere? Is he doing things that make no sense to someone operating at a normal capacity? Human aging is incredibly complex, and ailing appears differently for everyone. Don’t let a complex tool like non-expert AI usage define your perception of your father. It’s a probabilistic algorithm, eminently less complex than the human mind

261·23 days agoRe: Proton - my understanding of the situation is that they made a (blog) post endorsing one action by Trump (nominating a lady very competent in the tech space, I think specifically relating to privacy), which was blown out of proportion by ppl who want to paint with broad strokes.
IIRC, they even distanced themselves from trump within that post, or shortly thereafter in a social media post. It’s been a while but unless I missed something after the blow up, I don’t think they’ve done anything to endorse him
Edit: I couldn’t find the original, but at least stumbled across a timeline. Anyways, I remember thinking at the time I can at least understand this position from his perspective. I’ll leave it to other to decide https://techissuestoday.com/proton-ceo-responds-to-backlash-after-his-post-supporting-trump-selection/
Edit 2: I’m into it now. I’ll let the Proton CEO’s own words speak on his behalf (from link). Sorry for making this so long.
“First, while the X post was not intended to be a political statement, I can understand how it can be interpreted as such, and it therefore should not have been made. While we will not prohibit all employees from expressing personal political opinions publicly, it is something I will personally avoid in the future. I lean left on some issues, and right on other issues, but it doesn’t serve our mission to publicly debate this. It should be obvious, but I will say that it is a false equivalence to say that agreeing with Republicans on one specific issue (antitrust enforcement to protect small companies) is equal to endorsing the entire Republican party platform.”
